UNIT VI Hind limb and Pelvis

Study of Hip joint

It is the Synovial / ball & socket type of joint, having polyaxial movement. This joint is in
between cotyloid cavity of os-coxae and head of femur.
Ligaments:

1) Capsular ligament- This ligament starts from the rim or border of cotyloid cavity
and make extra room to hold the head of femur. Its synovial membrane reflects on
inner round ligament.

2) Round ligament- It is the intra articular ligaments which attach fovea capitis of the
head of femur with the non articular depression of cotyloid cavity / acetabular cavity.

3) Cotyloid ligament- This ligament also starts form the rim / border of cotyloid cavity
after capsular ligament. It makes extra room and increase the depth of the cotyloid
cavity to hold head of femur. It form bridge on acetabular notch called as transverse
ligament.

4) Accessory or Check ligament-This ligament found in the equines hip joint. This
check ligament along with round ligament prevents the abduction movement of hip
joint in equines. It is the strong band which detached from the tendons of abdominal
muscles and then it pass from acetabular notch and attach with notch of head of
femur.
