QUESTION #1
An atom is made up of a compact nucleus containing protons and neutrons surrounded by orbiting
electrons in different energy levels. Protons carry a + charge, electrons a – charge and neutrons
have no charge.
QUESTION #2
Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur
QUESTION #3
A.In ionic bonds one atom gains electrons and the other atom loses electrons; in covalent bonds
atoms share electrons.
B.Carbohydrates, fats, or lipids, proteins and nucleic acids
QUESTION #4
Nucleic acids control all functions in the cells.
QUESTION #5
A.Takes part in some reactions, for example, respiration
B.Transportation medium, for example, blood
C.Solute for other reactions to occur in, for example, saliva
D.Body temperature regulation
E.Base for body lubricants
QUESTION #6
A.Source of energy (ATP)
B.Components of cell structure (cell wall of plants, exoskeleton of arthropods)
QUESTION #7
Protection, insulation, source of energy
QUESTION #8
Structural proteins, enzymes, antigen/antibody response, source of energy
QUESTION #9
Diffusion is movement of molecules through a medium from areas of high concentration to areas
of low concentration, for example, CO2 from tissues to blood to lungs, O2 from air to lungs to
blood to tissues. Osmosis is the movement of water molecules through a selectively permeable
membrane (such as a cell or plasma membrane) from areas of high concentrations of water
molecules (such as pure water) to areas of low concentrations of water molecules (5% salt
solution). Osmosis is a special kind of diffusion.
QUESTION #10
Allows the cell to pull in needed materials against a concentration gradient.
QUESTION #11
Controls acid-base relationships in various body parts. An acidic environment would destroy
enzymes.
QUESTION #12
1. An acid: all acidic solutions have pH values below 7 and have an excess of H + ions when
dissolved in water.
2. A base: all basic or alkali substances like salts combine with H+ ions when dissolved in water
and have pH values above 7.
QUESTION #1
A cell is the basic unit of biologic organization of the body. It is made of protoplasm; structures
inside a cell are called organelles, such as the nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, and so on.
QUESTION #2
• Cells are the smallest complete living things.
• All organisms are composed of cells.
• Cells come from preexisting cells via cell division.
• Today’s cells are the descendants of the first cells from early in the earth’s history.
QUESTION #3
Molecules of phospholipids can maneuver themselves to allow water molecules to pass through
and then close, proteins can pull solid materials into the cell. Molecules are like mosaics but not
set in solid material, they can move proteins, form channels for transport, and so forth.
QUESTION #4
Ionically bonded compounds go into solution (or separate into individual ions) due to their polarity
and the polarity of the water molecule, whereas covalently bonded molecules, which are not polar,
go into colloidal suspension (atoms do not separate, they stay in clumps).
QUESTION #5
It contains the genetic material of the cell (DNA), which controls all cellular functions.
QUESTION #6
The respiration reactions occur on the folds or cristae of the mitochondria to produce ATP.
QUESTION #7
• They break down stored food in food vacuoles.
• They function in maintenance and repair of cell structures.
• They perform autolysis; they act as suicide agents in old and weak cells.
QUESTION #8
• Rough or granular ER synthesizes protein.
• Smooth or agranular ER transports fats and/or synthesizes sex hormones.
QUESTION #9
It functions in the storage of cellular products.
QUESTION #10
They are the sites of protein synthesis, and proteins are essential to cellular structure and function.
QUESTION #11
• They act as enzymes, which are necessary for chemical reactions to occur in a cell.
• They are structural parts of membranes.
• They function as antigens and antibodies for the immune response.
QUESTION #12
It contains two centrioles, which produce the spindle fibers during cell division.
QUESTION #13
• Movement of the cell itself, for example, flagellated sperm
• Movement of materials across a cell’s surface (cilia), as in the respiratory tract.
QUESTION #14
Leucoplasts store food; chloroplasts are green, contain chlorophyll and are sites of photosynthesis;
chromoplasts contain the carotenoid pigments (xanthophyll and carotene).
QUESTION #15
Plant cells convert the radiant energy of the sun, which humans cannot use as a food source, into
the chemical energy of sugar molecules (food). Without plants, humans and other animal life could
not exist.

juutalaiset vaativat niin äärettömän suuren koron. Minulla on enää
ratsurykmentin vapaaehtoisten vormuun. Hän oli pitkä ja solakka, ja
näytti hyvin kauniilta ahtaassa takissaan ja ahtaissa punaisissa
polvihousuissaan, jotka muodostivat kirkkaan väriläikän Ilonkan
valkoisen puvun vierelle. Mutta hänen isänsä oli tuhlannut poikansa
perinnön rajattomaan vieraanvaraisuuteen, vanhanaikainen koti oli
joutunut juutalaisten haltuun ja Madách’it elivät eräässä pienessä
talossa Kecskemét'issä eivätkä voineet kouluttaa poikaansa
valtiomieheksi.
UHKAAVA MYRSKY.
»Hän joi varmasti liian paljon äitinne antamaa viiniä ennen työhön
lähtemistään sinä aamuna», sanoi András koettaen nauraa. Mutta
hänen naurunsa kuulosti väkinäiseltä ja luonnottomalta. Kaikki isä
Ambrosiuksen opetukset eivät olleet voineet karkoittaa kokonaan
tiesi kohoavan Bideskuty’n uuden myllyn piipusta.
