2. Introduction

2.1 SCI 8008SEF Medical Microbiology & Virology II is a three-credit course in the programme
Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Science.

3. Aims and Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs)

3.1 Aims

The aim of this course is to provide students with an advance understanding of the
principles of microbial pathogenesis and medical microbiology laboratory
diagnostic testing. The teaching covers a wide range of topics including
pathophysiology, therapy and epidemiology of infectious diseases. Through this
course, the students are also expected to be equipped with advanced knowledge of
laboratory diagnostic testing in the field of Medical Microbiology.

3.2 CILOs

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. demonstrate advanced knowledge of microbial pathogenesis mechanisms,

epidemiology of emerging infections, treatment of infectious diseases;
2. critically evaluate various laboratory methods for antimicrobial resistance detection
and diagnosis of infectious diseases;
3. explain the principles of various advanced diagnostics technologies for human
pathogen detection;
4. interpret laboratory findings related to the diagnosis of infectious diseases.

5. Teaching and Learning Strategy

5.1 Two hours of lectures and one hour of tutorial sessions are adopted for each week. The
lectures cover theoretical knowledge in preparation for students’ discussions on how theories
and techniques are applied in laboratory settings. Tutorials are used to supplement lectures.
They include online activities, face to face tutorials and the use of interactive multimedia.
After the lectures, students will give an individual oral presentation on a state-of-the-art
laboratory technology in Clinical Microbiology.

5.2 The teaching plan is shown below:

6. Assessment

6.1 Course assessment includes continuous assessment and a final examination. Continuous
assessment includes a mid-term test and an oral presentation.

 Mid-term Test
A 1-hour long mid-term test will be given at the mid-term of the course. It will cover
lecture 1 – 4.

 Presentation
Students are required to give an individual oral presentation. A poster/PowerPoint is used
to assess students’ ability to understand the latest development of laboratory technologies
in clinical microbiology. Language proficiency and presentation skills are assessed in the
presentation as well.

 Written Examination: The final examination will be a three-hour closed-book examination.

6.2 The weightings of the assessment components are shown below.

Assessment Weighting
a. Mid-term Test 20%
b. Presentation 30%
c. Written examination 50%

To pass this course, student must obtain a pass in both Overall Examination Score (OES) and
Overall Continuous Assessment Score (OCAS). The passing mark is 40 in each case.

7. Alignment of Course Contents and Assessments with CILOs

7.1 The CILOs, content topics, and assessment components are related as follows:
