Honey extract with water attracting
properties for skin
• Clinically demonstrated skin repair.
• Skin moisturization via NMF-like mechanism.
• Tested in rinse-off formulations against market benchmark.
• Healthy, caring, natural and nutritious.

Definition / Composition
Honey is produced by (honey) bees from the nectar of flowers. It is composed of sugars,
mainly fructose and glucose, and contains trace amounts of several vitamins and minerals.
Honey is a natural humectant, which means it attracts and retains moisture. It has been
used in beauty care routines already since ancient times. Cleopatra’s legendary milk and
honey baths are just one of many historical examples of women using honey to pamper
their skin. Queen Anne of England was reputed to use a honey and oil concoction to keep
her long hair lustrous, thick and shiny. Honey is a natural ingredient with a healthy, nutritious
image that fits very well into the market trend of natural products that is now as popular
as ever.

MELHYDRAN™ is based on honey extract, obtained by gentle purification of natural honey.

Rich in oligosaccharides, organic acids, amino acids and minerals, it has NMF-like and
water attracting properties, providing moisturization and care to skin. Its healthy and
soothing image make it suitable for a wide range of rinse-off and leave-on applications,
including baby care.
Melhydran™ contains all the wholesome components of honey in a stable and easy to
formulate form, to be used for the benefit of skin and hair in personal care formulations.

Complementary test:
• Moisturization (ex vivo). Significant 24 hr. moisturization with a gel containing 5% Melhydran™.
• Hydro-retention on hair (clinical study). The hair washed with a shampoo containing 2% or
5% Melhydran™ is able to retain moisture under low relative humidity conditions better than
shampoo containing 5% glycerin.

After 4 weeks of treatment with a gel containing 5% Melhydran™, the skin microrelief has
been restored: the skin is well hydrated and the skin surface is much smoother.
Skin is well moisturized due to the water attracting properties of Melhydran™.
