Due Date: December 1, 2023, 08:00 a.m.

Questions.
Questions based on concepts of center of mass.
1. How is centre of mass different from centre of gravity?
2. What is the significance of centre of mass?
3. Does the centre of mass and centre of gravity of a body ALWAYS coincide?
4. Upon what factors does the centre of mass of a body depend on?
5. Can the centre of mass lie where there is no mass?
6. Does the centre of mass always lie inside of a body?
Questions based on position, velocity, and acceleration of center of mass.
1. Three particles of masses 𝑚 = 1 𝑘𝑔, 𝑚 = 2 𝑘𝑔 and 𝑚 = 3 𝑘𝑔 are placed at the corners of an
equilateral triangle of side 1𝑚. Locate the position of the center of mass.
[0.583 𝑚, 0.8660 𝑚 ]
2. Two blocks of masses 3𝑚 and 𝑚 are connected by a massless inextensible chord passing over a
massless and frictionless pulley. Calculate the magnitude of acceleration of the center of mass of
the system when the blocks are allowed to accelerate. [2.5 𝑚𝑠 ]
3. A 3 𝑘𝑔 body and 2 𝑘𝑔 body are moving along the 𝑦 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠, at a particular instant, the 2 𝑘𝑔
body is 1 𝑚 from the origin and has a velocity of 3𝑚𝑠 and the 3 𝑘𝑔 is 2 𝑚 from the origin and
has a velocity of −1 𝑚𝑠 . Find the position and velocity of the center of mass.
[(1.6 𝑚, 0 𝑚) , 1.6𝑚𝑠 ]
4. Find the position of the center of mass of the T-shaped plate from O, [−2.7 𝑚]

5. A circular plate of uniform thickness has a diameter of 56 𝑐𝑚, a circular portion of diameter 42 𝑐𝑚
is removed from one edge of the plate as seen below, find the position of the center of mass of the
remaining portion. [−9 𝑐𝑚]
