Introductory Message

Welcome to Journalism (English) 4.

The Journalism Learning Kit is a product of the collaborative


efforts of the Division of Aklan and Special Program in Journalism (SPJ)
writers, illustrators, layout artists, reviewers, editors, and Quality
Assurance Team from the Department of Education, Schools Division of
Aklan. This is developed to guide you dear learning facilitators in helping
our learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum.

The Journalism Learning Kit aims to guide our learners in


accomplishing activities at their own pace and time. This also aims to
assist learners in developing and achieving the lifelong learning skills
while considering their needs and situations.

For learning facilitator:

The Journalism Learning Kit is developed to address the


current needs of the learner to continue learning in the comforts of their
homes or learning centers. As the learning facilitator, make sure that you
give them clear instructions on how to study and accomplish the given
activities in the material. Learner’s progress must be monitored.

Journalism is one of the most vital professions in any


society. Schools are necessarily a haven for children to
discover, to practice and to perfect necessary lifelong skills.
It is where students get a taste of what it is like to write for
their school, their community, their dreams and their hopes.

Campus journalism plays an important role in the


academe. Thus, they should be continually trained to produce
a paper that is fair, balanced and investigative. The student
paper serves as a major venue for the exercise
of campus press freedom.

In this module, you will learn to give the roles and

ROLES AND FUNCTIONS OF CAMPUS JOURNALIST

Campus journalism is important, for it safeguards the halls and the


posts of democracy and provides the student readers a deeper
perspective; things that happen under their noses.
Campus journalists educate the public about events and issues in
the campus level and community as well. They spend much of their time
interviewing expert sources, searching public records and other sources
for information, and other newsworthy occurrence took place.

There are four basic responsibilities that are to be considered by
any campus journalist. They are legal, social, professional and ethical.

1. LEGAL
Campus journalists should know their rights and the rights of each
individual, and they should be sure they are compliant with legal issues.
This will ensure that there is no intrusion on matters of confidentiality and
privacy. Journalists must also understand the laws regarding libel and
invasion of privacy.

2. SOCIAL
Even though a news article bears a single journalist's byline, the
process requires significant collaboration. How good a journalists’ story
often depends on how adept he is at communicating and working with
others. They also need strong people and communication skills so they
can persuade sources to talk to them. It is the duty of the journalist to
make sure that the information is presented in a fair, balanced, inspiring,
and truthful manner.

3. PROFESSIONAL
A campus journalist has a professional responsibility to present an
accurate portrayal of events as they occur. Journalists are trained in their
work and follow a certain set of ethical guidelines. They are responsible
for looking at every angle and source as their stories should be well-
rounded and unbiased.

4. ETHICAL
Campus journalists are bound to a code of ethics. An ethical
journalist will provide the audience with meaningful information, but
he/she also knows when the information is too sensitive to be reported.
Some aspect of a journalist's job are not subject to any kind of law but
are just as important. Journalists must strive to present an accurate and
well-balanced explanation of the stories they cover.

commitment toward its roles and functions. A
journalist would require a high degree of
professionalism that could be achieved by power
of die-hard efforts and unending searching
ability, and being respectful to the works,
understanding with the surroundings and
accountability towards the school as well.

4. ETHICAL Campus journalists should think of their work in

as basic principles or standards by which he or
