LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Scope and Functions of Journalism and Campus Journalist
Scope of Journalism
There are three major divisions of journalism: written journalism, oral journalism
and visual journalism. Newspapers and magazines fall under written journalism and
are classified as periodicals. Periodicals are publications released in regular intervals:
bi-monthly, monthly, weekly, etc. A newspaper, compared to the magazine, prints
more news and has no special cover. Newspapers are printed in paper called
newsprint. News is printed all over the newspaper having the hottest news in the front
page. A magazine, on the other hand, has a special cover and prints less news but
more human-interest stories and features. Magazines are printed in book paper and if
ever a magazine contains news, it’s brief, summarized and can only be found inside
pages. Periodicals, journals, books, graphic media and brochures are under print
media. Radio falls under oral journalism and while television, movies and
documentaries are under oral-visual journalism. Radio and television are examples of
broadcast media while movies and documentaries are examples of film media.
Functions of Campus Papers
A campus paper may be mimeographed or printed published or released by an
organization or school whose name or logo appears in the masthead or in the editorial
box. The campus paper like any other media has functions:
AID TO STUDENTS
a. Provides opportunity for interesting writing.
b. Gives students the opportunity to learn how to read the newspapers.
c. Acts as stimulus to better work.
d. Develops students’ power of observation and discrimination concerning relative
merits of news articles.
e. Serves as outlet and motivation for journalistic writing.
f. Offers training in organizations, business methods, commercial arts, salesmanship,
bookkeeping and business management.
g. Develops qualities of cooperation, tact, accuracy, tolerance, responsibility and
leadership.

AID TO SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY

a. Informs the community of the work of the school.
b. Publishes school news.

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.

9
c. Creates and expresses school opinions.
d. Makes known the achievements of the school.
e. Helps unify the school.
f. Encourages and stimulates worthwhile activities.
g. Develops right standard of conduct.
h. Provides and outlet for students’ suggestions for the betterment of the school.
i. Develops better interschool relationship.
j. Develops school spirit.
k. Develops cooperation between the parents and the school.
The campus paper also has these following functions:
a. INFORMATION FUNCTION: This is the news functions of the campus paper: to
inform. Since information dissemination is the maid purpose of the campus paper, this
is the function most likely performed by any campus paper. It gives the readers
information concerning the things around the community and within the school.
b. OPINION FUNCTION: Through the editorials and editorial columns, the editor has
the chance to post his opinion regarding current events inside the school and the
community. The main purpose for this is to persuade to reader toward a certain point
of view.
c. EDUCATION FUNCTION: Tabooed topics such as sex, sex education, family
planning and the like are extensively and intensively discussed by writers of campus
papers. This is one of the most important functions of the campus paper: to educate.
d. WATCHDOG FUNCTION: The school paper serves as an eye for the readers to
see what is happening in the school and to guard the right of the young ones.
e. LABORATORY FUNCTION: It serves as the teaching tool for budding journalists.
Neophytes pattern their new experience from the existing and past papers.
f. DOCUMENTATION FUNCTION: Important school events and worthwhile student
accomplishments and achievements are recorded in the campus paper for posterity’s
sake. Most present-day stories are researched from old newspapers.
g. ENTERTAINMENT FUNCTION: The school paper, like an interesting book, keeps
the reader company especially when he is alone. Most human-interest stories are
stimulating to read.
h. DEVELOPMENTAL FUNCTION: In developing a country like the Philippines,
scholastic and commercial journalism has been given greater and nobler significance.
The sources of new journalists are school also. Journalists in campus publications are
most likely to be the journalists of the future. The young journalist whose news deals
with club activities, school elections and campus activities will eventually become a
better one whose news deal with activities of the nation, national elections and national
concerns. The developmental function of the campus paper doesn’t only have
implications on the young one himself but also on the school as a whole. School
administrators and staff may reflect their performance on the school paper and see
what improvements must be done.

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.

10
Campus Journalism plays an important role in the academe. It trains students to be
responsible members of the society. Thus, they should be continually trained to
produce a paper that is fair, balanced and investigative. The student paper serves as
major venue for the exercise of campus press freedom. Given that journalism is one
of the most vital professions in any society, campus journalism is one of the most
significant endeavors in the country. It is where students get a taste of what it is like to
write for their school, their neighborhoods, their dreams and their hopes. Journalism
is for the ‘voice of a voiceless ‘expressing opinions of all those in our society. It’s like
a bridge between the authorities and people. Therefore, its primary purpose is to make
sure all citizens are aware of their rights.
Functions of Journalism are to Inform, Educate, Guide and Entertain. The press
performs a very important role as means of mass communication in the modern world.
The press tries to inform its reader objectively about what is happening in their
community, country and the world at large.
Empowerment and foundation are ostensibly possible as campus journalism
inculcates responsibility among students in expressing their thoughts persuasively
without offending the opposite perspective, relaying their concerns and serving them
a venue of dialogue in the most educated manner.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

ENUMERATE THE DIFFERENT NEWS VALUES
Background Information for Learners:
• What are News Values?
News values are general guidelines or criteria which determine how much
prominence a media outlet gives a news story. They explain why a story interests its
audience; and how editors and other journalists decide that one piece of information
is news while another is not. Media outlets include newspapers, magazines, radio,
television, and the Internet. News values are also called news criteria or news factors.
Journalists are looking out for news stories that attract a significant audience or
readership. They must discover which information is newsworthy and filter out that
which is of little interest. By applying a set of guidelines or criteria, they can identify
what material will make the best stories. We call these guidelines “news values”.

• What are the 7 News Values?

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.

16
CONFLICT
• The news story contains struggle, confrontation, violence, protest or argument
(war crime politics, social debate and etc.. News about people or
organisations at odds with each other arouse curiosity. People want to know
what lies behind the conflict.

TIMELINESS
• An event is more newsworthy the sooner it is reported. News gets out of date
quickly. If it happened recently, it is timely. What is regarded as “recent”
depends upon the publication cycle of the news medium itself. On a television
news channel news events that happened during the past half hour are timely.

PROXIMITY
• Events are more newsworthy the closer they are to the community reading about
them. Events occurring in the newspaper circulation or broadcast area are more
likely to be newsworthy.

PROMINENCE
• Events are more newsworthy when they involve public figures. Well-known
people (politicians, celebrities, actors, musicians, athletes) can make the news
even when their actions are trivial. Because of their media prominence, people
feel a personal connection with them.

IMPACT
• Events are more newsworthy when they affect a greater number of people.
These events affect many people – the more people, the better the story.
Information that has a big impact on everyday issues such as health, welfare,
transport or national security have a big impact and generate much public
interest.

BIZARRNESS
• Something out of the ordinary has more news value than an everyday
event. The unexpected, strange or wacky story deviates sharply from what you
would expect. The unusual entertains.

CURRENCY
• Currency implies that the time for a topic has arrived. This includes events
which are already popular or trends which are currently in the news and being
talked about. More value is attributed to stories pertaining to issues or topics
that are in the spotlight of public concern rather than to issues or topics about
which people care less.

Background Information for Learners

Types of News Stories

As the reader goes on reading, he observes the different ways the news stories have
been written. This is so because there are different types of news, and each type is
treated differently.

Here are the following types of news stories according to their classifications.

News may fall under any of the following types according to:

A. Scope or Origin
1. Local news – report of events that takes place within the immediate locality.
2. National news – countrywide news is called national news. It is determined
when the news impacts the people of a certain country.
3. Foreign news – news that takes place outside the country.
4. Dateline news – many news stories come from other places. These stories
inclue the name of the city or province or country where the news event
occurred and sometimes the date on which the story happened. This notation
is called a dateline. The dateline precedes the story.

B. Chronology or Sequence
1. Advance or Anticipated – news published before its occurrence, sometimes
called dope or prognostication. The reporter foretells events expected to occur
at a definite time in the future.
2. Spot news – news that is gathered and reported on the spot. It deals with
unscheduled information demanding immediate publication. The reporter
himself was an eye-witness to the event that took place.
3. Coverage news – news written from a given beat or assignment. Both spot
news and coverage news are good examples of first-hand reporting.
4. Follow-up news – a sequel to a previous story. Having a new lead of its own,
it is a second, third or subsequent chapter of a series.

C. Treatment
1. Fact story – this is a plain exposition setting forth a single situation or a
series of closely-related facts that inform. It is written in the inverted pyramid
design.

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.

23
2. Action story – a narrative of actions involving not mere facts, but also of
dramatic events, description of persons and events, perhaps testimony of
witnesses, as well as explanatory data. Sports games, competitions and war
reports are examples of action stories.
3. Speech or Quote story – a news story usually written from a public
address, talks, speeches, statements and letters, and to some extent,
interviews. All are based on recorded information, either written or spoken,
and transcribed by the reporter in the form of news.

D. Content
1. Routine story – reported events that occur year in and year out like
enrolment, Christmas, election, graduation and anniversary stories.
2. Police reports – stories of events wherein the police, the military or
government authorities have to step in, like accident, fire, calamity (
earthquake, landslide, flood, volcano eruption ) stories, especially, when
people are killed or injured, and property if destroyed.
3. Science news – stories in science.
4. Development Communication – stories on development, advancement
and progress.
5. Sports news – stories on sports and athletics.

E. Structure
1. Straight news – news that consists of facts given straight without
embellishment. Its main aim is to inform. It uses the summary lead and is
written following the inverted pyramid structure.
2. News feature – ( Featurized news distinguished from a feature article ) It is
news, not a feature article. It is also based on facts, but it entertains more
than it informs. It usually uses the suspended interest structure like the
narrative, thus cannot meet the cut-off test like in straight news. The writer
may give his impression, may describe and narrate, but without resorting to
biased opinion.

F. Minor Forms
1. Newsbrief – a short item of news interest, written like a brief, telegraphic
message, giving mainly the result with details.
2. News bulletin – it is similar to the lead of a straight news story. Its aim is
just to give the gist of the news.
3. News-featurette – this is a short-news feature usually used as fillers.
4. Sidebar – a news item or a feature placed side by side its mother story to
which it is related but under a headline of its own.
5. Flash – a message giving a first brief news of an event. It is usually boxed.

The Miami Heat refused to let their amazing postseason run end in Game 5 of the
2020 NBA Finals.

Behind another superb outing from Jimmy Butler, the Heat overcame the Los
Angeles Lakers, 111-108, to stay alive and extend the series to a Game 6.

Butler had his second triple-double of the Finals, with 35 points, 12 rebounds, 11
assists and five steals, as the Heat came out on top after a thrilling back-and-forth
encounter. Duncan Robinson added 26 points, making seven of his 13 three-pointers
in the game. But Butler was the clear hero of the game for Miami, as he drew a foul
against Anthony Davis with 16.8 seconds left and drained the go-ahead free throws
for a 109-108 count. Before Butler's charities, Davis put the Lakers ahead with a layup
of an offensive rebound, doing so despite having injured his ankle in the first quarter
of the game.

The Department of Education (DepEd) has appealed to teachers to make some

learning module exercises and activities optional to prevent students from
experiencing “burnout” due to the overwhelming subject requirements they must
accomplish after just one week of remote classes.

Diosdado San Antonio, DepEd undersecretary, reminded them to gauge what

students should accomplish in a day and that the agency had a policy of not requiring
daily homework for every subject.

“These should be discussed by school teams because they are the ones who agree
how many tasks are reasonable [for students]. We do not want the students’
excitement in learning converted into burnout,” San Antonio said at a press briefing.

According to Jesus Mateo, DepEd undersecretary for planning, LSAs will be employed
to assist teachers in lesson preparation and delivery, guide learners and households
on their chosen learning delivery modalities, and monitor students’ progress and
achievements.

Report News Values of Topics
In School Publication

Background Information for Learners:

A generally agreed set of news values enables journalists to spot an interesting

and relevant story. They provide journalists with essential tool to organize, technique
and choose news from a wide amount of available information.

To go over the topic, important words will be encountered and unlock for further

understanding such as;

1. News - News is what people want to hear or need to know. News can inform,

educate or even entertain.

2. News values - are central to this process because they identify the

ingredients of a story that will engage people’s attention.

3. School Newspaper – is a school publication written and published by

students in a school under the supervision of a teacher.

4. Topic - a subject that is discussed, written about, or studied

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.

33
Here are Seven (7) News Values that may help you to spot a

newsworthy story:

1. Impact
➢ The number of people whose lives will be influenced in some way
by the subject of the story. For instance, the Covid-19 Pandemic
had more impact than low preasure in local place.

➢ Everyday issues such as health, welfare, transport or national

security have a big impact and generate much public interest.

2. Timeliness
➢ News gets out of date quickly. Recent events have higher
Than earlier happenings. Of particular value are stories brought
to the public ahead of the competition. These are known as
scoops. Example the NBA Basketball Championship of Miami
and Lakers.

3. Prominence
➢ For the same occurrence, people in the public eye have higher
news value than obscure people. For example, Piolo Pascual who
is a popular local artist in the Philippines.

4. Proximity
➢ Stories about events and situations in one’s home community are
more newsworthy than events that take place far away. For
instance, if thousand of people died in a Covid-19 Pandemic in a
far away country, the story has about the same news value as a
story describing how 100 of people died in the Philippines.

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.

34
5. Bizarreness
➢ The weirdness of an event can make it newsworthy. Dog bites a
child” usually is not a news, but a child bites dog is more bizarre.

6. Conflict
➢ Strife is newsworthy. The old newspaper adage “if it bleeds it
leads” rules. For example the conflict of policemen and the
political protest in Metro Manila.

7. Currency
➢ More value is attributed to stories pertaining to issues or topics
that are in the spotlight of public concern rather than to issues or
topics about which people care less. Stories come and stories
go. For instance, the COVID-19 Pandemic worldwide.
