FINDING THE RIGHT FRIEND

As the proverb says “A Friend In Need Is A Friend Indeed”. We should choose our

friends wisely and understand them well. If you (0) joins the wrong group of friends, you

can end up in a lot of trouble. Many young (1) peoples have been arrested for crimes such

as gangsterism, drug trafficking and illegal gambling because they are (2) influence by the

wrong friends. Rather than mixing with them, you can actually (3) advice those who are

involved in negative activities. You should suggest (4) on them that they can talk to a

counselor. Encourage them to participate in (5) health activities such as sports and

(6) society. A true friend will help you when you are in trouble. Besides, a true friend will

be a role model for (7) other to follow. He or she will always show respect and be

(8) obedience towards parents, teachers, and friends. By having such a friend, you will

follow in his or her positive footsteps. A true friend is indeed something special.

Love KL - Join the City Day bash tomorrow

The city is all set for a big bash tomorrow as KLites celebrate City Day, Thaipusam and Chap
Goh Mei. (15th day of Chinese New Year). The three events underline the cultural diversity of the
capital. The 32nd City Day celebrations on Feb. 1st were postponed as the Federal Territory Day
launching was held in Labuan this year.

‘’Love Kuala Lumpur" is this year’s theme and in an effort to celebrate its cultural diversity,
City Hall is calling on its multiracial dwellers to take part in the programmes organised in
conjunction with the event. It is hoped that participation by the various communities would help
enhance ties. Invitations have been sent to various non governmental organisations to take part
in the celebrations. KL is a melting pot and the authorities want to promote harmony and family
concept on a bigger scale.

For a change, the traditional bunga manggar and kompang will be traded for a lion dance
to welcome guests and VIPs to the event. The programmes will feature multi-racial events
including Chinese acrobatics. Youths are urged to engage themselves in the activities.

The City Day celebrations will kick off at Dataran Merdeka at 8.00 a.m. 11th Feb. (Saturday).
A string of events, including street soccer and fishing competitions, art and cultural performances,
have been slotted at various venues in the city. For more details, log on to City Hall website at
www.dbklgov.my .

Questions 39 to 44

You are going to read a story about Ivy.

Six sentences have been removed from the story.
Choose from the sentences (A - H) to fit each gap (39 - 44).
There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.
For each question, write the correct answer (A - H) below.

Studying

Studying is usually the least favourite thing amongst students. 39 Why is this the
case though? Shouldn’t studying be a fun activity to do, especially in the path of acquiring
knowledge? Perhaps we have been studying the wrong way all this time? It is very important for
us to improve our studying habits so as to help us succeed in our future.

Firstly, in order to study, we must always choose a quiet area as this will help us to remain
focused in the subject matter. A noisy environment will not help us at all because the distraction
is enough to break our concentration span. 40

Another good method of studying is to organise study groups. By having study groups, we
not only learn from each other, but it will also help to reinforce our understanding of the topics
learnt. 41 Those who excel at a particular subject will be assigned as group leader to help
those who are weaker in that subject. Towards the end of our study group, it is essential to have a
quiz or question and answer session. This enables us to remember each topic well and help us in
answering questions.

In addition, another important tip is to always understand the studying methods that suit us
best. By using the technique that works best for us, we are able to retain our memory in the most
effective way. 42 Some of us might opt to read aloud, make colourful notes or watch
video clips to help us remember better. 43

Last but not least, the essential part of studying is to always study in the same manner as we
will be sitting for our exams. 44 Thus, when we study, we should also study in the same
position and condition so as to help us in the storing and retrieving of memory.

9
Not all of us are good in acquiring knowledge via
A
reading.
Hence, we must learn what technique works best so that
B
we can utilise it to our own beneflts.
C Most of them would fret with the very idea of studying.

D As a result, it would make us feel frustrated to study.

E Making effective notes is another useful tip.

We can assign different group leaders for different
F
subjects.
In most cases, we answer exams in large exam halls, in a
G
seated position, with less noise around us.
H It is very important for us to be prepared before exam.

A Replacement for Plastic Bottles

You may have seen lots of plastic bottles lying around after outdoor events. People naturally get
thirsty, especially at outdoor events, and end up creating so much plastic waste when they buy bottled
drinks.

This problem of plastic waste is more prominent in marathons. Do you know what a
marathon is? 45 Marathon runners cover a 42-kilometre stretch in a single day. Throughout
the race, they are given water bottles to drink from. The organisers also have to provide the staff
with water bottles during the event. Imagine how many plastic bottles are used.

46 Instead of handing out bottled water or drinks to runners and workers at a

marathon, the organisers distributed small balls or pods of seaweed containing water. This product
is made by a London company. The seaweed pod is better than a plastic bottle in many ways. Let’s
look at the cost. 47 The other advantage is that it biodegrades in six weeks.
48 As you may know, the land and sea are already filled with too much plastic.

Here’s another special fact about the seaweed pods. 49 The runners just pop them
straight into their mouths, so no trash is generated at all and there is no wastage. There’s also no
need to worry about the pods tasting like seaweed. The seaweed pods are actually tasteless.

The seaweed pods can be tilled with water or any other liquid. They are useful not only for
sports but also for large-scale events. 50 Such events usually generate a lot of plastic
waste. If more inventors come up with solutions like this, one day we may not have to use plastic
packaging at all.

11
A They are safe to be eaten.

B It is a long-distance race.

C For instance, at concerts or road shows.

D It is cheaper to make a pod than a plastic bottle.

E Everyone was looking around for water to drink.

F This year, the organisers did something different.

G Seaweed could be found everywhere on the roads.

H Plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose.
