This chapter presents the research design, population, sample size, and sampling technique, the

respondents, research instruments, data-gathering procedure, and the statistical treatment of the gathered

data in the assessment of the English language speaking and writing skills of the third-year students under

the Department of Industrial Technology Major in drafting.

Research Design

The study utilizes qualitative research, where the researchers gather information on the

respondent’s outputs. The design is subjective and focused more on establishing answers to the reasons of

the existing problem in English language speaking and writing skills of the third-year students under the

Department of Industrial Technology Major in Drafting at Cavite State University CCAT Campus. The

objective of this study is to assess the speaking and writing skills of the third-year students under the

Department of Industrial Technology Major in Drafting. Data was collected from the respondents at one

point in time. The research approach that the researchers used is phenomenology research tradition

because they mainly focused on the existing problem in English speaking and writing skills in a

homogenous group. This only focused and relate on third-year students under the Department of

Industrial Technology Major in Drafting in Cavite State University CCAT Campus.

Tradition of Inquiry and Data-Generation Method

The strategy of inquiry that was utilized in this study is the phenomenology research tradition.

This involves recording the respondent’s perspective or experience in English speaking and writing skills.

The emphasis in this approach is placed on identifying what the participants and their shared stories have

in common. The researcher engages with a homogenous group of individuals, all of whom have the same

experienced in English speaking and writing skills.

explore their point of view, experiences, feelings and perspectives in English speaking and writing skills.

The researcher conducts a structured interview to limit the answers of the respondents and it will also help

them to finish the interview in a short period of time. The research will create a predetermined questions

that will be used in interview session.

from the students and teachers in-dept interview to ensure accurate information that will be used in the

research. The participants of the study are the third-year students under the Department of Industrial

Technology Major in Drafting on Cavite State University CCAT- Campus. The researcher will also get

the perspective of the teachers in order to know the reason of existing problems in English speaking and

writing skills of the participants.

Instrumentation

In this study the researcher's made their self-made interview questionnaires which were validated

by the validator. The interview questionnaire is a set of questions prepared by the researcher designed to

collect and gather factual information. To gather information the researcher will have a one- on-one

interview with the respondents. The researchers choose interviews as their research instrument since,

according to Burns and Grove (2013), interviewing is a a flexible technique that allows the researcher to

explore greater depth of meaning than can be obtained with other techniques, interpersonal skills can be

used to facilitate cooperation and elicit more information, and there is a higher response rate to interviews

than questionnaire. It will be based on the topic and all about the assessment in English language

speaking and writing skills of the third-year students under the Department of Industrial Technology

Major in Drafting in Cavite state university - CCAT Campus.

Ethical Consideration

The researchers will be guided by the following guidelines in conducting the interview. The

researchers will formulate a formal letter, duly noted by their thesis adviser, asking permission from the

director of instruction of the university to conduct the study through one-on-one interviews with the

selected respondents. Another letter, also duly noted by their thesis adviser, will be sent to the prospective

respondents, asking permission to conduct a study about the assessment of the English language speaking

and writing skills of the third-year students under the Department of Industrial Technology Major in

Drafting. The researcher will set the time and schedule to the interview based on the free time, schedules

and convenient time of the respondents to avoid conflict on allotted time.

A proper setting will be chosen for the conduct of the interview. The purpose of the interview

will be fully explained, and the interviewee will be assured of the confidentiality of their responses.

Moreover, the format of the interview and its nature, purpose, and expectations, as well as the timeframe

of the interview, will be explained. The interview will be done in an informal, conversational manner,

with the guide questions as a basis, so as to allow a degree of freedom and adaptability in getting the

information from the interviewee. Questions will be asked one at a time, giving the interviewee time to

think and answer the questions. All the conversation or interview process will be written down for

encoding purposes to ensure proper data is recorded relative to the interview.

After conducting an interview, the researcher will transcript the whole interview and will be

checked by the participants to make sure that the information written in the transcript is reliable and based

on factual information in the interview.
