WORKING WITH NUMBERS TO 100

5.2 SUBTRACTION
Grade 2
Learning Objectives
We are going to:
- Subtract ones from a 2-digits number
- Subtract tens from a 2-digit number
- Identify whether to add or subtract to solve a word problem.
Materials and preparation

Introduction
- Let students watch a video name “Subtraction song”. Then, lead into new lesson
What you see in the video?
Today, we are going to subtract ones from a 2-digit number and tens from a 2-digit
number. The lesson is 5.2 Subtraction.
Main activities
Activity 1: Subtract ones from a 2-digit number
- Teacher introducing the context: Look! Nancy and her family are going out for a
family picnic. Come let learn to subtract with them.
Look! Mr William are eating cherry. He has 68 cherries. He ate 6 cherries. Now let
find out: How many cherries are lefts with him?
We have to subtract 6 from 68 to find the number of cherry left.
68 cherries mean 6 tens and 8 ones cherries. And 6 cherries mean 0 tens and 6 ones
cherries.
To subtract, we first cancel 6 ones from 8 ones. It is equal to 2 ones. And then we
cancel 0 tens from 6 tens. It is equal to 6 tens.
- The teacher recalls the old knowledge: When 0 is subtracted from a number, the
different is the number itself.
So we get the answer is 6 tens and 2 ones which it’s 62.
Hence, there are 62 cherries left with Mr William.
Now, instead of removing the cherry, we can subtract the number directly. Let’s see
how.
Write the number 68 and 6 in the place value chart that is in the ones and tens
column. Now, first subtract the number 6 from 8 in the ones column, we get the
number 2. Write the answer in the one column.
Now, subtract the number 0 from 6 in the tens column, we get the answer 5 which it is
write in the tens column. That we get the number 62. Or we can write the calculation
is: 68 – 6 = 62.
There are 62 cherries left with Mr William.
- Teacher take another example: Look! Nancy is eating yummy cupcakes. There are 24
cupcakes. Nancy ate 3 cupcakes. How many cupcakes are left?
Let’s subtract 3 from 24 to find how many cupcakes are left.
We always subtract the ones first and then the tens.
4 minus 3 is equal to 1. 2 minus 0 is equal to 2. That, the different of 24 and 3 is 21.
Or we can write: 24 – 3 = 21.
There are 21 cupcakes left.

Activity 2: Practice to subtract ones from a 2-digit number

- Teacher guide student to do the excises (or play a game)

Activity 3: Subtract tens from a 2-digit number

- Teacher introduce: Did you know some of the answers without working them out?
Which number bonds did you use?
Now, let’s find out by worked example:
I have 53 candies. I gave you 10 candies. How many left are there?
Now, we have to subtract 10 from 53 to find the number of candy left.
53 mean 5 tens and 3 ones. And 10 mean 1 tens and 0 ones.
To subtract, we first cancel 0 ones from 3 ones. It is equal to 3 ones. The ones have
not changed.
And then we cancel 1 tens from 5 tens. It is equal to 4 tens.
So we get the answer is 4 tens and 3 ones which it’s 43.
After this, you can figure out: When we subtract tens from a 2-digit number, we only
need to see the tens column because the ones column will not change for sure.
We can show this on the number line.
We have 53 in the number line. Then jump back 10 on the number line. We can easy
see that: 53 – 10 = 43.
- Invite students to answer according to the form we have learned

Activity 4: Review number words on game

- Organize game for students
