TYPES OF ‘ER’ ENDING VERBS

In French ER ending verbs are divided into three types

 Regular verbs
 Irregular verbs
 Semi – irregular verbs

Regular ER ending verbs

For all regular verbs ending in ER, drop the ER and to the stem add the following endings which
correspond to the subject pronoun

e, es, e, e, ons, ez ,ent, ent

Irregular ER ending verb : There is only one irregular ER ending verb which is “aller – to go”

Aller – to go

Je vais I go Je ne vais pas I don’t go vais – je? Do I go?

Tu vas you go Tu ne vas pas you don’t go vas – tu? Do you go?

Il va he goes il ne va pas he doesn’t go va – t – il? Does he go?

Elle va she goes elle ne va pas she doesn’t go va – t – elle? Does she go?

Nous allons we go nous n’allons pas we don’t go allons – nous? Do we go?

Vous allez you go vous n’allez pas you don’t go allez – vous? Do you go?

Ils vont they go ils ne vont pas they don’t go vont – ils? Do they go?

Elles vont they go elles ne vont pas they don’t go vont – elles? Do they go?

Semi Irregular verbs : Semi Irregular verbs are divided into eight categories which are as
follows :

1. Cer ending verbs


Verbs ending in ‘Cer’ take ‘ç’ for nous form
Commencer – to begin
Placer – to place
Remplacer – to replace
Avancer – to advance
Prononcer – to pronounce
Annoncer – to announce

Example – Je commence
Tu commences
Il / elle commence
nous commençons
vous commencez
ils / elles commencent

2. Ger ending verbs


Verbs ending in ‘Ger’ take ‘geons’ for nous form
Manger – to eat
Changer – to change
Voyager – to travel
Télécharger – to download
Nager – to swim

Example – Je mange
Tu manges
Il / elle mange
nous mangeons
vous mangez
ils / elles mangent

3. Shoe verbs
The following verbs take è for all subject pronouns except nous and vous.

Lever – to get up
Mener – to lead
Peser – to weigh
Promener – to take a walk
Emmener – to take along
Acheter – to buy

Example – J’ achète nous achetons


Tu achètes vous achetez
Il / elle achète ils / elles achètent
