Project Information

8. Project Title: IoT Flood-Water Measurement System for Urban Areas in Vietnam

9. Abstract (Please provide a brief description of your project, max 300 words):

Global warming has made the climate more severe and unpredictable. One of the consequences of this
issue is heavy rainfall, leading to widespread flooding, especially in countries with tropical climates,
including Vietnam. Urban flooding in cities such as Hue, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, etc, serves as a
specific example of the common problem that countries around the world are facing. The urban
context presents a significant challenge regarding the lack of trust among the residences in previously
inaccurate flood warning devices, leading to serious economic and lifestyle consequences for the
residents. These challenges started from the inadequacy of current data and technology in meeting the
required levels of accuracy and speed. Based on that challenge, the project proposes a solution: "IoT
Flood-Water Measurement System for Urban Areas in Vietnam." The IoT system utilizes water level
sensors installed on urban roadways to provide accurate warning information to the community,
government, and citizens proactively. This helps them take effective preventive and responsive
measures. The system uses LoRa technology, enabling long-range data transmission with low energy
consumption. Additionally, the system integrates solar energy with a compact design to avoid data loss
due to power grid failures in harsh weather conditions. The IoT system has been successfully deployed
in the city of Da Nang, with a centralized management structure that assists the government in
monitoring and making quick decisions based on real-time floodwater level data. This project opens
opportunities for developing applications and research related to natural disaster prevention and the
establishment of smart cities.
