gallbladder. When you eat a meal that
contains fats, hormone CCK signals your
gallbladder to contract and release the bile
to your small intestine through the common
bile duct. Bile salts main function is fat
digestion and absorption of fat soluble
vitamins A,D,E,K. It is also an antimicrobial
and serves as a form of detoxifcation of
excess toxins, waste products, cholesterol
and estrogen.

The human body produces several different
Ag4QHUxm
bile acids, but two primary ones are
synthesized in the liver: cholic acid and
chenodeoxycholic acid. These two primary
bile acids are conjugated with either glycine
or taurine to form glycocholic acid and
taurocholic acid. Gallstones and sludge
specifically develop when your liver creates
a bile higher in cholesterol to bile salts.
Normalizing bile is important for shrinking
gallstones, reversing sludge and improving
overall gallbladder health. Shop Here: Ox Bile

There is no one size fits all to bile salt supplementation. Bile salt
supplements are often called Ox bile, TUDCA, Taurine + Glycine
or cholic acid. Bile salts are often recommended in a
gallbladder protocol to support bile production, fat digestion,
and reduction of many unwanted gallbladder symptoms. You
do not need all. It is only recommended to use one form of bile
salt supplement. Reminder you have your own bile composition
and may respond differently to bile salts depending on your
OWN body.

TUDCA (tauroursodeoxycholic acid) is a taurine conjugate of

ursodeoxycholic acid. It is a secondary bile acid that helps to
support fat digestion and liver health. Evidence has shown that
TUDCA helps to support healthy liver enzyme levels, support
bile production from the liver and may help shrink gallstones. It
is best taken before meals.

Ox bile has been traditionally used for years for gallbladder

issues and to support fat digestion. Derived from animal bile, it
is very similar to human bile. It is recommended to supplement
alongside Taurine. Ox bile is often recommended without a
gallbladder or biliary dyskinesia.

Taurine and glycine supplementation can also be used to

increase normal formation of bile. The ratio should be
three(taruine) to one(glycine).

CHOLERETIC
Herbal medicine has been used for years
to support gallbladder, liver health and
bile flow. There are two herbs that

specifically support gallbladder, liver
health and bile flow: choleretic and
cholagogue. The next page discusses
cholagogues in further detail. As you go
on your gallbladder journey, reminder the
health of your bile starts in the liver!
Choleretics support liver health, the
production and secretion of bile in the
liver.

Choleretic herbs are:

Barberry
Greater Celandine
Peppermint
Turmeric
Globe artichoke
Wormwood
Schisandra

Often choleretic herbs are combined with

cholagogue herbs for overall gallbladder,
liver and bile support. If you are having

CHOLAGOGUE
As a reminder, bile is produced in the liver,
stored and concentrated in the gallbladder.
From the gallbladder, bile travels the bile duct,
and makes it way to the small intestine. Bile
along with pancreatic enzymes helps to digest
fats. In a perfect world, the gallbladder contracts
to promote bile flow. Unfortunately for many of
us, this bile flow is sluggish. Herbal medicine has

been used for years to help remedy this.
Cholagogue herbs help to signal the gallbladder
to contract, push the bile out and flow to the
small intestine for fat digestion.

These are some common cholagogue rich

herbs. These are often found in liver and
gallbladder herbal formulas. Some of my
favorite products are shown on the right:

Artichoke
Greater Celandine
Gentian
Dandelion
Oregon Grape
Wormwood
Burdock
Barberry
Peppermint
Turmeric

Please note cholagogue herbs should be

avoided or cautioned with the amount taking if
you have bile duct obstruction, stones in
gallbladder neck, bile duct or struggling with
frequent pain and attacks. Please also check
contraindications if you are pregnant,
breastfeeding or on medications.
