Capstone Update #2

What I have accomplished so far

I have interviewed teachers to gather background information. I have surveyed multiple high school
students within my school community in order to create a lesson plan to best fit the needs of the
students around me. I have tried out various filming techniques and strategies to engange learners. I am
leaning towards either a whiteboard drawing explanation or drawing digitally on a device. I have
narrowed down the area in which I want to help others. Most students struggle with physics or
chemistry. Math targeted videos would help students understand material rather than memorization
techniques. Students have agreed a video must be shorter than 10 minutes to stay engaged. Tests are
the most struggled way of demonstrating learning. Students agreed that memorizing lots of material is
difficult. My strategy is to create understanding, so memorization is not needed.

What I plan to accomplish by the end of the week

I would like to complete one full introduction video and upload it. This will take time to film and edit. I
want to focus on balancing chemical equations for my first video. Using visualization techniques such as
drawing to explain.

My needs (materials, time, space, mentor etc.)

I need to set aside two hours for filming and an hour for editing. I will need to do research to ensure full
understanding of a concept. Students said they fall behind when concepts build on top of each other.
Due to lacking understanding of one topic, it contributes to lack of understanding later. I want to create
videos that build on top of each other.

Challenges I encountered and how I have overcome them

I have encountered difficulty remembering topics I learned a while ago. Because the needs of the school
are grade 10 basic chemistry units, I will go back and review past material to ensure that I can teach
students watching these videos to the best of my ability.
