The bar chart illustrates the proportion of expenditure on roads and transport in
Italy, Portugal, the UK and the USA every five years between 1990 and 2005
Overall, the spending of the four given countries on roads and transport decreased
over the years. While the Portuguese government spent the most on roadways and
transportation, these were not focused on by the British one
The Portuguese government spent about 26% of its national budget on ỉmproving
roads and transport system in 1990. However, this figure fell dramatically to 20%
in 1995 and continued to decrease to about 16% in 2005. Similarly, roads and
transport in Italy were upgraded by a fifth of the Italian domestic budget in 1999.
The data then declined gradually to about 12% in 2000 before rising minimally in
2005
The American government allocated about 13% of its central budget for the
transport infrastructure in 1990, yet the expenditure reduced slightly to about 14%
in 1995, which then increased gradually before falling again to 14% in 2005. In the
UK, a tenth of its state budget was spent on enhancing road quality in 1990 before
the spending rose to 13% in 1995. However, the figure was only 7% in 2005 after
experiencing a sharp fall in 2000
