Chapter one

Background of study

Singing, the vocal production of musical tones, is so basic to man its origins are long lost in antiquity
and predate the development of spoken language. The voice is presumed to be the original musical
instrument, and there is no human culture, no matter how remote or isolated, that does not sing. Not
only is singing ancient and universal, in primitive cultures it is an important function associated not so
much with entertainment or frivolity as with matters vital to the individual, social group, or religion.
Singing and speaking are complex tasks involving physiological, neurological, aerodynamic and
psychological processes. When we listen to a voice, we hear and respond to its pitch, loudness
and timbre as well as to any linguistic content. Skilled singers are able to manipulate their pattern
of vocal fold vibration and adjust vocal tract configuration to create their desired sound outcome
(Welch, 2005).

The roots of voice therapy can be traced back to the professional use of the voice in antiquity. During
the Baroque period, aspects of the singers' voice came to the fore, and in the beginning of the twentieth
century, physiologic and medical perspectives concentrating on the peripheral areas of phonation were
introduced.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Singers, are not advancing more with the use of their voice because of the level of inferiority placed on
the instrument (voice) and this has become an underlying problem as they believe that there is nothing
more to the voice than just singing and talking.

Purpose of the study

This study is aimed at portraying the usefulness and the value of the voice as an instrument for therapy.
In a bizzare society as ours where there is so much chaos and disorder, music has become a soothing
medicine to heal and relieve people of all the weird happenings and restoring order to/in the society.

Significance of the study

Performance, as the acting of a play or the playing or the singing of a piece of music in front of
an audience, shows how well the performer can perform on the instrument of performance
before an audience (Sinclair [Ed.]’ 1992|). This performance demonstrates the use of the voice as
a form of therapy to provide a stable environment for everyone irrespective of the dilemmas that
surrounds us. It will also help the upcoming singers to appreciate the voice as not just a talking and
singing instrument but also a therapeutic instrument.

Scope and delimitations of the study.
