A- READ CAREFULLY
A GOOD BLEND CALLED MARIAH

Mariah Carey is an American singer, songwriter, actress and record producer. Although she was
born in New York, we can’t simply say she’s American. Her father, Alfred, was of African and
Venezuelan origin while her mother is Irish.
“It’s been difficult for me to grow up. I always felt a bit different from everybody in the
neighbourhood. I was a different person ethnically. And that’s a problem”, Mariah says.
Not surprisingly, her family started suffering racism a long time before Mariah was born.
Patricia, her mother, had to escape from her family to marry Alfred ( a black aeronautical engineer
who was unacceptable for her family) and they were never in touch again.
Mariah felt abandoned by her maternal family, but she inherited their passion for music. In fact,
Patricia developed a career as an opera singer and a vocal coach. When Mariah was three years
old, her parents divorced. That was the time when Mariah discovered music helped her to
overcome fear. She remembers: “I began to take the radio secretly to my bed at night and just sing
from my heart and try to find peace with music”
During primary school she was good at subjects that she enjoyed, such as music, art and
literature, while not doing other subjects homework. After some years she began to write poems
and add melodies to them, so she started as a singer-songwriter when she was still attending
secondary school.
Though Patricia introduced her daughter to the world of classical opera, she never pressured
Mariah to follow that career, as the girl never seemed interested in that music. Mariah remembers
that she kept her singer- songwriter works a secret and noted that
Patricia was never a pushy mum. “I respect opera but it didn’t
influence me”, Mariah says.
However, many people think that Mariah should try opera, since
she’s got a unique high register voice. Through her training with her
mother, she’s learned to control her voice masterfully and also to look
after it. “I have nodules on my vocal cords. My mother says I’ve had
them since I was a kid”, Mariah confesses. “If I hadn’t learned how to
avoid vocal efforts, I wouldn’t be able to sing now”
Her latest song “You Don’t Know What to Do”, shows she has mastered her art completely.
Throughout her career, Mariah has sold more than 200 million records worldwide, making her one
of the best-selling music artists of all times. Definitely, she was born to sing.

2- You’ve just received the following e-mail from a friend. Write back answering his questions
and offering some advice.

Hi Julian,

Thanks for your last e-mail. Hope your radio programme’s doing wellI.

I’ve some exciting news. I’ve decided to study pharmacy in BA next year. What do you
think is the best place for me to study at? Haven’t chosen one, yet.

I also need some advice, too. Darren, my school partner, has invited me to share a flat
with him next year. It’d be great if he weren’t so lazy! Truly, I don’t think he’ll get better but
maybe I should give him a chance, shouldn’t I? Though he doesn’t work hard, he’s
bright.

We get on quite well, but I’m worried it’s not a good idea to share a flat with him. To make
matters worse, he’s got two cats. You know they aren’t my favourite pets!

It’s hard for me to decide now, and I wouldn’t like to offend him. Any ideas?

Thanks a lot

Daniel
