4TH ADULTS FINAL EXAM

A- READ CAREFULLY

People who live in caravans,

motorhomes or RV’s (American English for “recreational vehicle”) cannot
say where they live. They can live anywhere!
An RV normally includes a kitchen, a bathroom, a bedroom and a living
room. These vehicles are useful for everything, from short breaks and
camping, to full-time living. They are usually found in campgrounds and can
be rented in most major cities and tourist areas. They are occasionally used
as mobile offices for business travellers and often include gadgets like a
generator and satellite Internet.
The RV lifestyle is followed by those people who are interested in travelling
and camping rather than living in one location. Nowadays more and more families are choosing RV travel as a way to
see parts of the world while keeping their jobs through technology (Internet, mobile phones or Skype among
others). Some people take old diesel vehicles and modify them to run on biodiesel or used vegetable oil, in order to
make them more environmentally friendly.
This lifestyle is particularly popular with senior citizens, who have often sold their homes and travel to warm climates
in winter. For example, they travel nearer the equator during the winter months and return in spring.
There is another group of travellers called workcampers . These are people who work at the campground in
exchange for a free campsite or pay. These jobs are varied: office work, bookings, gardening, housekeeping and so
on. But work-camping also offers job opportunities outside campgrounds, at national parks, museums or wildlife
reserves . That was Cody Bain’s case:
“ We found a great chance to make money with an included RV site in a fun town near Yellowstone National Park.
This was the kind of job we wanted. When we arrived, it began to snow. That wasn’t a surprise for that time of the
year in the woods. In the following weeks the weather was unusually rainy but we weren’t upset because we knew
hot summer days were coming. We worked at Buffalo Bill Hotel, which is right downtown, so all the shops and
restaurants are close at hand. About five blocks away there are more facilities, like a supermarket and a Dance Hall.
We worked as Head Housekeepers four days a week – inspecting clean rooms and helping with the laundry and dry-
cleaning service. This job kept us busy and provided some exercise too. We had three days off, so we were able to
enjoy the sights of Yellowstone. The landscape was stunning! The hotel found that workcampers are responsible and
hard working. That’s why there were other thirty vehicles staying with us in the RV site of the hotel. It was an
amusing community of campers to chat and work with . To sum up, we ‘ve enjoyed workcamping, it’s a great way to
spend a summer”.
