A- READING COMPREHENSION

“HEROES”, the American science fiction television series, appeared on NBC from
2006 to 2010. This drama tells the stories of ordinary people who discover
superhuman abilities, and how these affect the character’s lives. It emulates the
style of American comic books. It was acclaimed by the critics and received many awards, including the Emmy
and the Golden Globes. An internet extension of the series, “HEROES EVOLUTION”, was created too. Fans can
also find official magazines, action figures, interactive websites, a mobile game, a novel, clothing, etc.

The first season, known as “Genesis”, begins when a group of people gradually notice they have special
abilities. At the same time, several individuals are investigating the origins of these abilities. For example,
Mohinder , a daring and honest genetic engineer, researches into the biological source of the change. Noah,
who’s polite but greedy, represents a secret organization called The Company which wants to control
superpowered people. Eventually, all the heroes work together to stop an explosion in New York. Every
season has a final heroic mission. The second, for instance, was to stop the release of a deadly virus.

The story is so admired because fantasy and reality mix up. The Company people really give you the creeps.
The heroes, however, are never larger than life and you can’t help feeling for their weaknesses. After all, the
writer is telling us not to hesitate when we have a problem. If we start being part of the solution, we are
HEROES too.
