lpM= Lengthofweld(inlnches)x60
A = Width x Thickness
S=P
Where "S" equals the ultimate tensile strength (in Psl), ``P" equals the load in pounds (lbs.), and
``A" equals the cross-section of the coupon before testing (width x thickness.
J/lN.= AxVx60
lpM
Where "A" is amperage, "V" is voltage, "60" is a constant, and "IPM" is travel speed jn inches
per minute. J/IN. is the units of measurement and represents joules per inch.

GAGE MEMBER
VERNIER SCALE
Each line on the gage member represents .025", while each line on the Vernier scale represents
.001". When using the Outside Circumference tape, apply a snug pull of 5 pounds tension, first
making certain the tape and part have been cleaned.
In the illustration, the divisions to the left of the Vernier zero are 19.900 inches plus 2 divisions or
19.950. The 5th line on the Vernier coincides with the line on the Linear Tape which represents
.005''. This is added to the 19.950, making a total circumference reading of 19.955 inches.
As a suggestion for checking very large parts -pieces of masking tape can be used to hold the tape
in proper parallel position. In many appljca{ions, magnets can also be used.
Pi Tape® circumference tapes have a .001" resolution with a guaranteed accuracy of .005" up to
120"-
Care
• When not in use, wipe clean and apply a light rust preventative oil. Store tape in container.
• No periodic adjustments are needed.
• Make certain the tapes havanot been stepped on or kinked which may destroy the accuracy.

Strain is "deformation of a solid due to stress"
SEress
o fer7st./e sfross -stress that tends to stretch or lengthen the material -acts normal to the
stresed area
o compressive stess -stress that tencls to compress or shorten the material -acts normal
to the stressed area
a sfrear/.ng sfross -stress that tends to shearthe material -acts in plane to the stressed
area at right-angles to compressive or tensile stress
E]as€icEfty
Elasticity is a property of an object or m`aferial which win restore it to its original shape after
distortion.
A spring is an example of an elastic object -when stretched, it exerts a restoring force which
tends to bn`ng it back to ife original length. This restoring force js jn general proportional {o the
stretch described by Hooke's Law.
Yield Strength
Yield strength, or the yield point, is defined jn engineering as the amount of stress that a
material can undergo before moving from elastic deformation into Dlastie deformation.
