COKE OVEN :
• The main aim of coke oven is converting coal to coke.
• The input of coke oven is coal .
• In this process of converting coal to coke there are 4 sections;
1. COAL PREPARATION PLANT (CPP)
2. BATTERIES
3. COKE DRY COOLING PLANT (CDCP)
4. COKE SORTING PLANT (CSP)
COAL PREPARATION PLANT (CPP)

• In this preparation process the raw material coal is stored in RMHP (Raw
material handling point).
• CPP consists of some sections there are;
1. Foreign objective separation
2. Rotary screens
3. Mixing bins
4. Coal blending
5. Hammer crusher
6. Screening
7. Coal tower
• In this process we use 7 types coal .one type of foreign coal and 6 types of
Indian coal.
1. FOREIGN OBJECTIVE SEPARATION (FOS): In this the impurities
containing raw material which is imported from foreign is removed.
2. ROTARY SCREENS : Then it is sent to rotary screens. Rotary screens
are used to separate the coal of size 150 and +150.
3. MIXING BINS : In mixing bins the coal is stored .It’s capacity is 100
tons . Generally we use 7 types of coal ,40% foreign coal and 60%
Indian coal.
4. COAL BLENDING : Coal blending is the process of mixing of coal.
Both Indian coal and foreign coal is mixed. Foreign coal contains less
ash content. So to reduce ash content foreign coal is used in this
process.
5. HAMMER CRUSHER : Hammer crusher are used to reduce the size of
Coal from 150 mm to less than 3mm.
6. SCREENING : Screening is the process of separation of Coal
depending upon shape and size . The screens allows 3mm size Coal to
underflow and size more than 3mm are sent back to Hammer crusher
to reduce size.
7. COAL TOWER : Coal tower consists of 8 horizontal pockets. Each
pockets has capacity of 1000 tons and we can store 8000 tons of Coal in
each Coal tower.
BATTERIES :
• In our Vizag steel plant 5 batteries
are there in coke oven. Each
battery consists of 67 ovens and 68
chambers . Ovens and chambers
are made by silica bricks for
indirect heating. In oven, coal is
present and in chambers, coke
oven gas is present for heating at
temperature of 1100°c heat
transferred through walls then
carbonization occurs.
• Coke is manufactured by heating of
crushed coal in the absence of air. Coke Oven Battery

• Temperature at 1100°c for 19


hours.
• Each battery consists of 4 cars there are;
1. CHARGING CAR
2. PUSHING CAR
3. DOOR EXTRACTOR CAR
4. LOCO CAR
1. CHARGING CAR: It is present at the top side of the battery. For five
batteries 3 coal towers are used. Charging car contains 3 lids at the
top for charging coal by the coal tower. The capacity of charging car
is 32 tons. Through the help of hopper coal is discharged to coke
ovens. Charging car contains 3 bins for discharging coal. Right and
left bins are 12 tons each and middle bins is 8 tons capacity.
2. DOOR EXTRACTOR CAR : After carbonization the coke will be formed
at a temperature above 1000°c. Coke ovens contains a door at back for
coke discharge. The door will be opened by the door extractor like
mechanical operation.
3. PUSHER CAR : When door extractor opens the door, then pusher car
present at the front of the ovens will pushes the coke without touching
the walls of the oven.
4. LOCO CAR : Loco car present at the back side of the battery on rail.
Pushed coke is directly collected by the Loco car for the next process.
• The input of coal is 32 tons by the charging car but output gives 25
tons of coke and remaining 7 tons is coke oven gas.
• Coke oven gas is sent to coal chemical plant for extracting or removing
coal chemical present in gas.

COKE DRY COOLING PLANT (CDCP) :
• Heated coke sent to coke dry cooling plant with the help of loco car.
• The counter current flow of heat exchange happens in CDCP.
• We have 5 CDCP’S In steel plant. Each contains 4 chambers , Each
chamber has 200 tons capacity.
• The cooling media is nitrogen. Nitrogen flow counter current to the
coke .
• Nitrogen is heated upto 800°c and coke cooled to 200°c.
• Bottom of the chamber fans are connected ; So the 800°c Nitrogen
sent to boiler, Which contains water then nitrogen is cooled and
water is evaporated like a steam.
COKE SORTING PLANT(CSP) :
• CSP has 2 units
1. COKE DEDUSTING UNIT (CDU).
2. HAMMER CRUSHER.
Cooled coke sent to CSP for deducting of coke and then purified coke
sent to hammer crusher then screening is happen. The screen gives 3
major diameter ;
1. 75mm coke for blast furnace.
2. 25mm coke for sintered plant
3. Powder called coke breeze for aluminum factory.
