independence of 13 of Great Britain’s North American colonies, which went on to form the
United States of America . The war was fought between the United States and its allies,
including France and Spain, and Great Britain and its allies, including German mercenaries
and Native Americans . The war ended with the Treaty of Paris, which recognized the
independence of the United States and marked the end of the First British Empire . The
treaty also resulted in territorial changes, with Great Britain ceding generally all mainland
territories east of the Mississippi River, south of the Great Lakes, and north of the Floridas
to the United States, Tobago and Senegal to France, and Menorca, West Florida, and East
