1 Lean management implement to FedEx Corporation

FedEx Corp. provides a broad portfolio of transportation, e-commerce and business services to
clients and businesses around the world. And also it is an American multinational company
with headquarters in Memphis. FedEx Express has around 170 facilities worldwide (Smith,
2020), roughly 100 of those dedicated to this service in the United States. Aircraft maintenance
is an enormous activity and obligation that requires a great deal of time, space, man-hours, and
resources. As a response to the global economic depression in 2008, FedEx Express turned to
lean management, hoping to save money during critical times. Since then the company's
performance has greatly benefited from this operational approach.

2 Problems and solutions related to Lean management in FedEx

Lean manufacturing centers on minimizing waste and cutting costs through automation and
continuous operational efficiency improvements. Lean manufacturing relies on integrated
technological systems, a smaller workforce of highly trained employees, and a radical shift in
the culture of the company. Each of these elements can present distinct challenges that need to
be overcome to achieve a truly efficient lean manufacturing system. Understanding these key
issues is a key building block for developing FedEx's lean implementation plan.

 Many places focus on Los Angeles International Airport's (LAX) FedEx Express
(Reservation, 2020)facility. The crew will complete 14 C-checks per annum before
adopting the lean management approach.
 The crew had reached a point where they could complete 30 C-checks per year after
following lean management principles. It took the FedEx Express LAX crew 32,715
hours to complete a C-check on a plane before implementing lean management
strategies. The number is dwindling continuously.
 In FedEx, cooperation team has come together to identify 68 milestones integral to
the C-check, while defining each segment using increments of 4 hours.
 FedEx’s numerous factories have introduced the Manufacturing Index to assure
quality standards. Placing these benchmarks allows factories to be more consistent
and reduces miscommunication and misunderstandings.
 Another remarkable achievement highlighted in this report included a three-year
study of the emissions from footwear factories, showing that CO2 emissions were
reduced by 6 percentage.
