Heineken is one of the largest beer manufacturers in the world. With close to two hundred
breweries globally and over 65 languages spoken, their supply chain is complex and diverse.
Driven towards continuous improvement, Heineken’s experts in digital innovation knew that
there were opportunities within their vast global network to improve safety and efficiency
in their manufacturing operations.
THE PROBLEM.
Our Customer Success specialists worked closely with Heineken’s TPM and L&D departments
to learn that they faced a number of underlying issues with the effectiveness of their work
instructions.
OUR SOLUTION.
We’ve changed the way that Heineken approaches the production, distribution, and tracking
of work instructions on the shop floor. We know from experience that adopting digital work
instructions has immediate and dramatic effects on efficiency and safety. Our collaboration
with Heineken is no exception.
SwipeGuide has been rapidly adopted by the Heineken Global Supply Chain and welcomed

BELGIUM: ALKEN-MAES.
The Alken Maes Brewery in Belgium is a flagship production facility for Heineken and a key
success in the implementation of the SwipeGuide platform. This brewery works hard to
produce a wide variety of beers under the Alken Maes name; a diverse selection of products
that requires a high standard of operational excellence.
Before SwipeGuide was implemented, the staff at Alken Maes experienced a number of
issues. Low visibility of work instructions and standards made it difficult to optimize both
quality and safety.
1. Safer production.
Through clear, visible work instructions, SwipeGuide has created a safer work environment
at Alken Maes. Workers have effortless access to all procedures and training, the moment
they need it. This leads to greater mobility, confidence, and accuracy in all daily operations
on the shop floor. These factors translate directly to safety.

2. Better processes.
SwipeGuide provides workers on the factory floor with easy-to-use, standardized work
instructions to increase operational efficiency in all processes.
A. OPI
Heineken measures their operational efficiency with a metric known internally as
Overall Performance Indicators. The purpose of OPI is to create a standard
measurement for the efficient usage of people and machines on the factory floor. OPI
is a comprehensive unit of productivity, water and electricity usage, and extract losses
in the manufacturing process.
Through our collaboration, Heineken has increased their OPI from 52.2% to 57.8%.
An increase in OPI translates to huge cost savings for Heineken. Not only in the hourly
rate of operating machines and paying employees, but in the amount of raw materials
spared for better use.
A. Downtime.
One of the most exciting elements of this collaboration is the dramatic reduction of
expensive downtime on the factory floor. Since the implementation of SwipeGuide,
planned downtime has been reduced by 60%.
How was this accomplished? The simplicity and clarity of SwipeGuide’s digital work
instructions allow for significantly more efficient product changeovers.

3. Better products.
Not only does SwipeGuide help make processes more efficient, but this efficiency ultimately

A. Extract Losses
Extract losses, production line mistakes caused by human error, have also fallen from
3% to 2.5%. To put this accomplishment in perspective, a 1% increase in extract losses
can cost a brewery an estimated €200,000 every year.

B. FTR.
FTR stands for First Time Right, and is tied directly to error reduction. Heineken uses
this metric to ensure that processes on the factory floor are performed correctly, the
first time. When FTR increases, it means that employees are spending less time
correcting mistakes and are producing higher-quality products at a faster rate.
With SwipeGuide, FTR rates at Heineken have jumped from 67% to 93%. This
represents significantly less waste of raw materials, a significant reduction in defects,
and better-tasting beer for customers.

2. Higher FTR.
APB used SwipeGuide to increase their FTR by 2.5% with intelligent, step-by-step
work instructions. This improvement means that APB is able to deliver a higher
quality product to customers.
At APB, SwipeGuide has helped deliver a 67% reduction in can-coding errors. Third-
party distributors use “can-codes” to efficiently stock and track the product for sale.
Less errors means fewer customer complaints and a boost for the brand’s global
reputation.

1. 5S Improvement.
Heineken Mexico uses a metric known as 5S to qualify hygiene standards within
manufacturing processes. Since implementing SwipeGuide, Heineken Mexico has seen
5s measurements climb from 75% to 90%.
2. CILT Standards.
CILT is another key Heineken metric used to measure the success of regular machine
maintenance. CILT standards focus on the cleaning, lubrication, and inspection of
critical machinery on the factory floor. Great instructions help employees perform
these tasks with less hesitation and frustration, and with greater accuracy.
With SwipeGuide, Heineken Mexico has seen CILT standards increase from 75% to
90%. This means their machines run more efficiently and with fewer expensive
failures and instances of unplanned downtime.
