When should I use Microsoft Publisher instead of 5

Word?
Microsoft Publisher is an application designed for creating documents that require a
specific layout like brochures, greeting cards, and newsletters. Word also has publish-
ing capabilities, and online templates are available to help you create these types of
documents. With the improved layout engine and new graphic features, you’ll get
more predictable layout results in this version of Word.

However, if your document has an intricate layout, like a multi-column newsletter with
graphics, pull quotes, and continuation text, you might discover that Publisher can
produce better results with less effort. This doesn’t mean that Word can’t be used for
this type of task, but it will be much easier if you can simplify the layout.

To help give you a better understanding of a simplified layout compared to an intri-

cate one, we’ve used the same newsletter content in a practice file for both the Word
and Publisher parts of this book so that you can use it for comparison.
