Introduction ,___
The City Porbandar has got a national level importance being a birth of Father of the Nation , Mahatma Gandhiji.
The city is also known as "Sudamapuri" in the memory of Saint Sudamaji, a beloved friend of Lord Krishna . The
city Porbandar is linked with vast facilities of Rail, and Aviation Transportation. various types of industries are
flours hed by leap and bounds. which has designated the city as an Industrial city. Not only that, the city has wide
field of Education having various schools, colleges and institutions. Deposite of these , there was no facility for
visionary disabled people popularly known as "Pragnachakshu" (Blind) for their upliftment and development in the
city.

"Shree Bhartiya Pragnachakshu Gurukul" the Educational Centre for the Blind came into existence on 1st June
1960, specially upliftment and development of the blind , with very meager facilities. It was felt hard to run, but the
motive was fi rm and noble which inspired variuos institutions, prominent indutrialists, businemen and generous
members from public. And with their help, assistance and generous donatins have given the shape it is today. The
Porba ndar Municipality came forward and spared a land for the building of the institute and vis-a-vis so many
industrialist, businessmen generously donated to meet expenditure for the constructing building and general
expenditures. And regular donations from generous people have kept the institute flourished.

Aims & Obieclives w .~ ~:


The aims and objectives of the Institute are :
to inspire the condidence and zeal amongst the people who are lacking of God gifted vision and / or eye sight.
to instensify zeal and to awake them regarding their abilities of living in the society proudly irrespective of their
physical disability.
to educate them so as to enable them to work skilfully and to them live self dependently in the society.
to impart them training of craftmanship so as to enable them to earn for their livelihood in the society.

To fulfill these aims and objectives, the institute is imparting Education and Craftmanship training to all blind people
without any discrimination to cast, creed and religion .

The Institute has been awarded recognition by the following various departments of the State and
Central Govt.
The Institute is registered under the Society Act 1860 vide Regn. No. GUJ - 34 / 1961
The Institute is registered with Charity Commissioner (Junagadh) Porbandar under the Gujarat
Public Trust Act vide Regn. No. F - 5
The Directorate of Social Welfare, Gujarat State, Gandhinagar has awarded recognition under
Physically Impaired Act 1995 vide Regn . No. 62
The Commissioner of Income Tax, Gujarat Circle have declared the donations 'Tax Free' made to
this institute vide No.CIT.R / HQ 63 P 1963

Activities of the Institute


The following activities are being carried out by the Institute to achieve its aims and objectives :

1. PRIMARY EDUCATION through BRAIL :


The Bl!nd people are _being educated through Brail language recognised by the State Government, by
the trained teachers right from the 1st standard to 7th standard through Brail Slates, Arithmetic Board
in Brail , Brail Typewriter and also through special charts for Geographic Knowledge.

2. CLASSES OF STD.10 & 12:


Blind students who desire to obtain higher education upto Degree level in Music are being offered
training in Music by trained teachers, audio cassettes etc. and on completion of their training, they
are got admitted as a private examinee to the examination of Std. 10 & 12 as the case may be,
conducted by the State Board.

3. TRAINING IN CLASSICAL MUSIC :


The Institute is offering Education & Training in Classical Music to the Blind students , which covers
not only songs but the knowledge of various Musical Instruments. On completion of the training, they
are being sent for Degree exanination in Music such as B.A. in Music.

4. TRAINING IN CRAFTSMANSHIP :
To make the blind people self sufficient / self dependent, the Institute offers training in Craftsmanship
such as Canning Work (particularly Chairs), light Carpentry Work, Doormat! Making etc ..

5. HOSTEL FACILITY:
The Institute has a well furnished and well equipped Hostel for the Blind students. Each of the
Hostellers is given a Coat, Bed, Cupboard etc. The hostel is also having mess facility such as
Tea and Breakfast in the morning, Lunch, Tea & Refreshment at noon and Dinner. All these facility is
being offered free of cost.

6. FREE MEDICAL CHECK-UP :


The Institute takes care for the health of hostellers. A free medical check-up camps are being
organised at the institute from time to time. The medical services are being offered by the prominent
doctors of the city Porbandar. Free medical treatment is also given to needy hostel mate.

7. ARRANGING VARIOUS COMPETITION:


The institute organizes various competitive programmes and activities for the students of the institute.
The aim behind such programmes and activities and is to develop the physical fitness, educative
creativity, development of intellectuality and mental development. The various competitions are of
General Knowledge, Memory Test, Ellacution Competition, Classical Music Song, Classical Music with
Instruments, Brail Writing, Personality -development & Evening Bhajan Competition.

8. SPORTS COMPETITION :
Similarly sports competitions are also being arranged such as ; 100 metre running, 50 metre Lame
running, 100 metre speed Walking , Long Jump, Musical Bell Competition and Ball Throw Competition.

9. SCHOOL FOR INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC :


The Institute has a moto to-keep our ancient culture alive. It offers training in Indian Classical Music
and to operate various musical instruments to the general public in the city, those are fond of the
classical music.

10.AUDIO EDUCATION PROJECT:


The Institute has enriched Library with the audio cassettes prepared on various subjects such as
General Knowledge, English Language, Literature, Arts, Science by the specialised teachers. Through
this medium the education is imparted to the blind students of the Institute.

11. COMPUTER & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CENTRE :


The institute imparts education in Computer to the Blind as well as physically handicapped students
at free of charge. To fulfill this aim and to offer profound training and education to the aforesaid
students, the Institute has purchased and kept various software of the world class standard.
