Introduction
National association for the blind is
india's single largest voluntary
organisation working for the welfare of
visually impaired people through a
network of 65 regional branches and 24
state branches. It was established in the
year 1952 in Mumbai.
Vision
To work towards an environment
where each and every blind person
of this country will be able to lead a
life up to has optimum potential and
be so empowered as to be able to
work towards his own growth and
development
Objectives
• To prevent blindness as far as possible.
• To empower the blind with education and training
towards self-sufficiency through employment or
self-employment and thereby integrate them with
dignity into the mainstream of the society
• NBA india work in the areas of rehabilitation,
education, production, computer trainings,
research, prevention of blindness, low vision aids,
employment for the blind and vocational guidance
Facilities
1. Hostel for blind trainees:-
The hostel provides accommodation facilities for 15 blind girls
and has blind friendly infrastructure with nutritious food with
home like environment under proper discipline.
2. Microsoft cyber cafe for the blind:-
Provides access to internet, scanning, printing and CD writing
facilities at very low rates. During 2006-2007 computer system
have been provided for reading to 5 visually impaired
students for competitive exam on registration basis.
3. Adosh memorial library for the blind :-
Books made available from different libraries for the
blind women to read on computer in braille and in
audio.
Facility is also available to scan and edit books on
demand.
4. Reward table recording lab :-
Facility is provided to blind beneficiaries to get their
print books and other reading material recorded both
in audio cassette and electronically.
5. Eye camps :-
- The centre organiser eye camps
(i.e. association with Rotary south
metropolitan and Dr.Shroff eye centre) for
the blind beneficiaries twice a year. Blind
boys and girls from various college and
hostels.
- NBA functions for the relief of the blind.
Activities
1. The technical training ccentre of the blind
relief association hosts an industrial
motivation campaign.
2.The BRAhosts industrial motivation
campaign by MSME development institute.
3. The idea is to motivate the current and
former vocational trainees towards
entrepreneurship through starting small
business of their own.
Education activities
• The government - aided JPM school is an all
boys residential school providing education
and comprehensive range of services free to
around 200 students under its care.
• The school is affiliated to the central board of
secondary education. The school also has a
nursery section, which prepares children for
future educational tasks through the playway
method.
Rehabilitative services:-
- Basic rehabilitative training :-
Candidates who enroll at the centre undergo
basic rehabilitative training the cover orientation
& mobility, activities of daily living.
Personal care and grooming, home management,
braille and communication skills e.t.c.
- Modifying an older person's home environment
to improve their safety and independence at
home and to reduce their risk of falls.
Roles of NBA
- NBA, india identifies visually impaired children
through eye camps, screening of children in slums,
municipalsschools etc. as well as through prevention
of blindness programmes in the rural areas and
survey.
- The visually impaired children identified are
checked by trained opthalmologist to ensure
whether part of the vision or the entire vision can be
restored.
- The incurably blind children or low vision
children are placed in the integrated
education programme where the child is
admitted into the normal school for the
sighted and provided the support of itinerant
teacher who helps him to be included
successfully in such a school.
