VOCABULARY
Curriculum Vitae/Resume-short written description of your education, qualifications, previous jobs
and personal interest
Retraining- mid career training in new skills not directly related to a previous occupation, for example a
sugar cane worker retraining as a plumber
Vocational Training- education with an emphasis on work related practical skills, for example in
information technology, tourism, tourism, printing, or construction trades.
Professional Education- advanced academic and practical training for professions such as law, medicine,
teaching, engineering
Rehabilitation- restoration to good condition
Entrepreneur- a person who starts and owns a business, makes decisions, takes risks, and intends to earn
a profit
Levels of Educational Opportunities:

● Informal- basic learning through the use of morals (Mores and Values). This is attained through
churches, the community and other organizations
● Formal- early childhood, primary, secondary, tertiary, vocational, professional training, rehabilitation,
retraining
Functions of Education
● prepares students to live and function effectively to meet the needs of society
● Ensure continuous development of literacy, numeracy and technical skills
● preserve , transmits and transforms cultural norms and values of society
● Prepare individuals for careers so they can provide for themselves and families
● contribute to their individual development as productive citizens whether it may be intellectually,
physically, socioculturally,emotionally or spiritually
● Ensure upward social mobility

● Ensure the development of life skills


Ways to attaining an Education
Availability and access to various educational institutions is facilitated by:

● The internet ● Universities


● Books ● Technical schools
● Libraries
● Professional organizations etc.
● Colleges
Levels of Government assistance to Education
Some students receive assistance with
● Books
● laptops/ computers
● Free meals at school
● Free transportation
Students who do well in regional examinations receive
scholarships which covers their fees and living expenses.
Governments level of involvement in education is based on the following factors

● Finances

● Human resources available for education


● Commitment by the government themselves to education
● Commitment of students, families and other stakeholders
● Contributions by private businesses, voluntary organizations
● size of the country
● developmental needs of the country
Additional roads to gaining an education include;
1. Adults who left school are able to take basic literacy classes
2. Adults can take CSEC and other qualifications part time
3. Some colleges and universities offer introductory courses to persons who don’t have CSEC passes
4. Various Caribbean universities offer practical and academic courses. In some countries the
government pay these tuition fees
5. The University of the West Indies (UWI) has open campuses across the region that offer distance
learning.
6. Overseas universities have facilities that allow Caribbean students to take courses without leaving
their home country
Sports, Culture and Human Resources
● Some sports people and artists from the Caribbean have world wide reputation. These persons bring
attention to their birth countries as tourist destinations which helps the economy.
● These sports and cultural celebrities participate in activities which inspires and motivates others to
get involved.
● A pool of talent from young people create the base from which star performers emerge and develop.
● Strong public interest stimulates development of sports and culture facilities and training
programmes. These sporting programmes and cultural programmes get persons trained to become
professionals.
● These professionals earn a salary and are able to financially and otherwise contribute to the
development of young people in the community.
Availability and access to various recreational institutions is facilitated by

- government - Internet
- private businesses - individual interests etc
- voluntary organizations

Governments can assist in the development of sports and culture and provide scholarships and recreational
facilities. Their involvement is guided by

- Finances - Businesses
- Human resources - Voluntary organizations
- Commitment of students, families, communities - Size of the country
- Developmental needs of the country etc.

The provision of scholarships in the area of sports and culture help with human resource development. It
allows students access to finance for development of their talents.
Participation in sports and culture helps develop human resources:

● Sports promotes physical health, self-respect and mental wellbeing.


● Team sports, drama and other activities build group-work and organizational skills.
● Sports and cultural activities build creativity, confidence and self -expression.

Sports and culture contribute to the economy:

● Artisites and sports people earn money from outside the region.
● There are rewarding jobs in sports facilities, music studios, training and administration.
● Culture and sports are growth areas in tourism.
● the region gains visibility. Potential investors and visitors are more likely to show interest.

Sports and culture also promote regional integration.

● West Indies Cricket brought the region together in the mid- 20th century.
● Jamaican music and Trinidad and Tobago Carnival influence the culture of the other islands.
● Carifesta games also bring the region together.
