ABSTRACT

This project will investigate how literature can be used to educate language
skills and foster cross-cultural awareness among fourth-year college students.
Grammar, vocabulary, and the development of language skills have traditionally been
the main topics of language instruction. The students’ capacity to successfully
negotiate cross-cultural relationships is constrained by this method’s frequent failure
to address the cultural components of language. Language instruction that is based on
literature offers a comprehensive strategy that integrates the growth of language
proficiency with the development of cultural sensitivity and intercultural competence.
Students gain analytical skills, critical thinking aptitudes, and the capacity to query
and confront preconceptions through literary analysis and interpretation. Additionally,
because students are enthralled by the imaginative and thought-provoking qualities of
literary works, literature-based instruction fosters student involvement, motivation,
and enjoyment of the language learning process as students are captivated by the
imaginative and thought-provoking nature of literary works. While literature-based
language teaching has shown promise in promoting language proficiency and cultural
understanding, further research is needed to explore its effectiveness in specific
educational contexts. The goal of this study is to determine how well Literature
Language Teaching promotes language competency and cultural awareness among
Grace Mission College fourth-year students. The study intends to investigate how
using literature in language instruction can motivate students to exercise their
language skills meaningfully and advance their intercultural competence. The
importance of this study rests in its ability to further language teaching by offering
evidence-based perceptions of the advantages and difficulties of Literature Language
Teaching implementation in college settings.
