2.1 THE TRANSFORMATIVE JOURNEY OF CSR AT ZOO NEGARA MALAYSIA

Our group assignment took us on an exciting and impactful journey to Zoo Negara Malaysia, where we
had the opportunity to engage in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities. Under the guidance of
our respected lecturer, Dr. Nursaadatun Nisak Binti Ahmad, and in collaboration with the dedicated
personnel at the zoo, we aimed to contribute to animal welfare, promote environmental sustainability, and
gain valuable insights and experiences.

In today's society, businesses are increasingly recognizing the importance of CSR, which involves taking
responsibility for their impact on society and the environment. As students of course Personal
Development and Ethics (MGT 538) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), we embarked on this CSR
assignment to deepen our understanding of CSR principles and apply them in a real-world setting.

Our assignment took us to Zoo Negara Malaysia, a renowned institution committed to wildlife
conservation, education, and sustainable practices. With its wide array of animal species and
comprehensive conservation programs, the zoo provided an ideal platform for us to contribute to
meaningful initiatives while gaining hands-on experience.

Upon our arrival at Zoo Negara Malaysia, we were warmly welcomed by the zoo personnel, including
experienced zookeepers, conservationists, and educators. Their knowledge and expertise became
instrumental in organizing and facilitating our CSR program, ensuring that we could make a meaningful
impact during our time at the zoo.

To maximize our collective efforts, the zoo personnel divided our group into three teams. Each team was
assigned specific tasks related to animal care, conservation, and education. This division allowed us to
work closely with zoo personnel, as well as with one another, creating a collaborative environment that
fostered learning and growth.

In a remarkable collaboration, the zoo personnel also invited a group of enthusiastic international school
children to join us in our CSR activities. This inclusion not only provided a unique learning experience
for the children but also allowed us to engage with a wider audience, promoting awareness and
understanding of wildlife conservation among young minds.

Throughout our assignment, we aimed to share the benefits gained from this experience, including the
practical application of our knowledge, hands-on experience in animal care, increased environmental
consciousness, and personal and professional skills development. Additionally, we aimed to address any
challenges or weaknesses encountered during the process and explore strategies to overcome them.

By the end of our assignment, we hoped to leave a positive impact on the zoo, its inhabitants, and the
surrounding community. Our journey to Zoo Negara Malaysia offered us the opportunity to bridge the gap
between theory and practice, while also nurturing our passion for conservation and sustainability
2.2 OBJECTIVE

The objectives of participating in CSR activities at Zoo Negara were focused on animal welfare,
community bonding, industry development, and public awareness. These objectives guided our
engagement and efforts throughout the program.

Animal Welfare:
We aimed to gain relevant knowledge and information about the significance of animal welfare in Zoo
Negara. Our objective was to educate ourselves about the best practices for proper animal care and
welfare, equipping us with the necessary understanding to contribute to animal welfare initiatives
effectively.

Community Bonding:
Another objective was to create a strong sense of community and collaboration among students, lecturers,
and to foster a shared commitment to caring for animals and strengthen the bonds within our community.

Development of the Animal Welfare Industry:

We aspired to contribute to the growth and development of the animal welfare industry sector by
promoting responsible practices that prioritize the well-being and ethical treatment of animals.

Public Awareness and Compassionate Action:

We aimed to foster a balanced understanding of animal welfare issues and encourage compassionate
actions towards animals. By spreading awareness and promoting empathy, we sought to inspire positive
change in how animals are perceived and treated in society.

4.0 THE ACTIVITIES
Our team has 12 members, we were divided into two groups, with six individuals in each group. One
group was assigned to the Bird Aviary, while the other group was tasked with the Bear Complex.
Although we were working with different animal species, our tasks were quite similar, and we
wholeheartedly embraced them.

A. BEAR COMPLEX

Cleaning the Animals' Homes:

We arrived early in the morning when the zoo was preparing to open its doors to visitors. Our first
task was to assist the zookeepers in cleaning the animals' homes. This was crucial for maintaining
animal hygiene and ensuring a pleasant experience for visitors. The Bear Complex housed
various animals, including hedgehogs, deer, sun bears, tapirs, and wallabies. Each enclosure
presented unique challenges, but it was rewarding to contribute to the cleanliness and comfort of
these animals' living spaces.

Feeding the Animals:

As we began our work right after the zoo opened, we were responsible for feeding the animals.
The animals had just woken up and were hungry. We assisted the zookeepers in providing them
with their designated meals. Each animal had specific dietary requirements, so we ensured that
they received the appropriate food. For example, the sun bears consumed chicken and fruits. It
was an incredible experience to enter the enclosures and place the food, knowing that the animals
would soon enjoy their meal after we had left.

Cleaning the Zoo Area:

In addition to caring for the animals, we helped the zookeepers maintain the cleanliness of the
surrounding zoo area. Our tasks included sweeping dried leaves, picking up trash, cleaning the
rubbish area, and tidying the zookeepers' workplace where they prepared the animals' food. The
assistance we provided allowed the zookeepers, who typically operated with a small team of
around four people, to work more efficiently.
Chopping the Food:
When visitors started to gather around the animal enclosures, we were assigned to work with
animals in inner cages, inaccessible to the public. These animals frequently moved to different
areas for visitors to observe. Our responsibility was to assist the zookeepers in chopping food into
small pieces and dividing it based on the animals' dietary needs. For example, sun bears required
larger portions, while hedgehogs needed smaller portions. It was a meticulous task, but we
understood the importance of providing the animals with appropriately sized meals.

B. AVIARY

Cleaning the Aviary:

Our first task was to ensure a pristine and inviting environment for the birds. With determination
in our hearts, we set out to cut the grass, sweeping away the dried leaves that had gently fallen,
and meticulously cleaning the floors and drains within the bird enclosures. The zookeeper
emphasized the importance of maintaining clear and unobstructed drains to prevent flooding
during heavy rains. Understanding the significance of this task, we worked diligently to ensure
the smooth flow of rainwater, allowing it to be channeled directly to the nearby lake.

Feeding the Birds:

The well-being and nourishment of the avian residents were of utmost importance to us. Guided
by the experienced zookeeper, we embarked on the daily ritual of feeding these exquisite
creatures. Our provisions included a diverse range of sustenance, from fish pieces and seeds to
bread and fruits. It was fascinating to learn that the fish pieces were actually mackerel, and each
feeding session involved an impressive amount weighing up to 10 kilograms. We also discovered
that some birds required special diets to maintain the health and vitality of their feathers,
underscoring the intricate balance required to ensure their well-being. Moreover, the zookeeper
shared an intriguing fact about the peacocks—their majestic tail feathers, shed once a year, were
carefully preserved by the zoo as prized possessions. We were reminded that these captivating
plumes held significant value, especially for the male peacocks in their elaborate courtship
displays, and were strictly regulated to remain within the zoo's possession.
Respecting Nature's Bounty:
Throughout our engagement, we learned to respect and cherish the natural beauty surrounding us.
The zoo's policy prohibited visitors and volunteers from keeping the shed feathers of the
peacocks, emphasizing the importance of preserving nature's wonders within the zoo's protective
environment. This gentle reminder instilled in us a sense of reverence for the intricate cycles of
nature and the need to safeguard its treasures.

6.0 THE WEAKNESS OF CSR PROGRAM AT ZOO NEGARA

Lack of comprehensive focus:

CSR programs at Zoo lack a comprehensive focus on addressing all relevant aspects of corporate
social responsibility. Prioritized certain areas such as animal conservation while overlooking
other critical areas like employee welfare or environmental sustainability.

Limited impact on local communities:

Focused primarily on animal welfare such as conversation and education rather than directly
addressing the needs and development of local communities. Resulted in minimal impact on the
social and economic well being of the surrounding communities.

Insufficient long term commitment:

CSR programs at zoo’s may suffer from a lack of sustained commitment. Due to the nature of zoo
operations and financial constraints, there can be a tendency for short term initiatives that do not
address the underlying systemic issues or provide long term solutions.

Ethical concern:
Keeping animals in captivity for entertainment purposes conflicts with their natural behaviors and
can lead to psychological distress and compromised well being.
7.0 HOW TO COPE WITH THE WEAKNESSES

Comprehensive approach:
Ensure that resources and attention are allocated to each area to achieve a balanced and impactful
approach.

Community engagement:
Foster meaningful relationships with local communities by actively involving them in the
development and implementation of CSR programs. Understand their needs and aspirations and
tailor initiatives to address their specific concerns. This can be initiatives like job creation,
education and community empowerment.

Long term commitment:

Develop year plans that address systemic issues and create lasting change. Secure necessary
resources and support to ensure the continuity and effectiveness of CSR programs.

Ethical considerations:
Conduct thorough ethical assessments of animal welfare practices and consider alternative ways
to educate and conserve without compromising the well being of animals. Explore partnerships
with conversation organizations and experts to ensure best practices are followed and ethical
concerns are adequately addressed.
8.0 BENEFITS GAINED FROM THE CSR PROGRAM

Participating in CSR activities at Zoo Negara Malaysia allowed us to put our academic knowledge to use
in a practical setting. We increased our understanding of wildlife management and developed practical
skills that are very applicable to our future employment through hands-on experience in animal care,
habitat maintenance, and conservation practices. The event offered us with an invaluable opportunity to

It also increased our group's awareness of environmental issues. We saw firsthand the zoo's commitment
to protecting the environment, waste control, and lowering its energy usage. This exposure encouraged us
to implement equivalent eco-friendly practices in our daily lives and to become environmental advocates.
We gained a better grasp of the significance of natural habitat protection and conservation for the
well-being of both animals and humans.

CSR programs at Zoo Negara Malaysia encouraged our personal development and benefited in
developing numerous soft skills. We improved our capacity for problem-solving, communication, and
teamwork through cooperating in groups. Interacting with zoo staff and even international school students
helped us develop our public speaking and interpersonal skills. The difficulties we had during the CSR
programme gave us chances to strengthen our leadership, resiliency, and personal growth.

Overall, our participation in the CSR program at Zoo Negara provided us with a valuable opportunity to
cultivate and strengthen our teamwork and collaboration skills. By working together in a team setting, we
developed the ability to collaborate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. We learned to
coordinate tasks, communicate efficiently, and overcome challenges as a cohesive group, all with the aim
of achieving common objectives. These essential skills in teamwork and collaboration are not only
beneficial in the context of CSR programs but also highly transferable and applicable in various personal
and professional settings. Our involvement had a positive impact on both ourselves and the Zoo,
contributing to wildlife conservation efforts and fostering a sense of responsibility towards the
environment.
9.0 CONCLUSION

In this program we managed to educate and encourage our group participants about animal care. We also
learn a range of skills such as event planning and emergency management. We share new insights and
facts with friends and family in the hope they will share them with many more, helping to increase
awareness and knowledge about animal conservation and care.

The experience gained will also encourage us to do more volunteer work in similar projects, which will be
of great help to the industry. That's because keepers, veterinarians, and zoo staff work tirelessly behind the
scenes to care for these animals, but visitors often don't get to witness them. It is therefore very helpful for
visitors to know that staff are taking time from their personal schedules to improve the quality of life of
the animals.

The awareness of the programme exposes students to the importance of cultural diversity to conversation
efforts. Through this course, we met a group of passionate zookee[ers from different cultural backgrounds
and learned to see wildlife conversation from different perspectives. The experience was an eye-opener
for the students, as they now recognize the value of cultural diversity in protecting the planet’s precious
ecosystem.

This CSR programme service gives us the opportunity to gain volunteer experience so that we as students
can develop and improve communication and job skills that will benefit us in the future. We would also
like to thank all the participants who volunteered to help make the CSR programme a success. We hope
that the local community will gain a lot of new knowledge and get the best experience through this
project.
