This Article From Yang Berhormat Dato Sri Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hassan,Minister Of
Planning And Resources Management,Minister Of Public Utilities-Commemoration Of
World Forestry Day ,Semenggoh Nature Reserve,Kuching

A very good morning and Happy World Forestry Day. It is my honour and pleasure to lend my
support for today`s World Forestry Day Celebration. We are honoured to have the community,
various agencies and schools in support of this auspicious event.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Sarawak has a total area of 12.3 million hectares, in which 9.5 million hectares are covered by
forests including secondary forests. Of this, 6 million hectares has been designated as
Permanent Forest Estate. Therefore, Sarawak is very much covered by forests - more than 77
percent!
On top of that, the Government had set a target of 1 million hectares for Totally Protected
Areas. To date, we have 900,000 hectares of TPAs and an additional 300,000 hectares have
been identified and are in the process of gazettement. This brings Sarawak to a total of 29
gazetted National Parks, 6 Nature Reserves and 4 Wildlife Sanctuaries - a number that you can
expect to see a further increase in the future.
In the present day, I am happy to see that schools, various agencies, forest related industries
and NGOs are actively collaborating and promoting conservation awareness to the public. We
have witness a new level of awareness and concerns with regards to our environment. Just flip
through any local daily newspapers, they will definitely spare a section dedicated to the
environment and conservation. This too, has contributed in promoting environmental awareness
among our public.
Another development that I am happy to highlight is the formation of various Special Park
Committees and Special Wildlife Committees by SARAWAK FORESTRY which sought and
appoint experts, public and NGOs in co-managing Sarawak`s various national park and wildlife
sanctuaries. The emphasis now is getting the public involved in conservation. It is a win-win
situation for everybody.

I also would like to take this opportunity, to urge other agencies to take part and contribute more
to our conservation effort. SARAWAK FORESTRY has once again done a marvelous job at
creating and promoting environmental awareness. Others can learn and worked together with
them in their endeavours. Conservation is for all to partake, it has no exclusions.
As we pay tribute to World Forestry Day today, we must not forget about days to come. World
Forestry Day and the significance behind the celebrations should be embedded in our thoughts
everyday. Think of ways and means to contribute to our forest sustainability. Sometimes, big
solutions start with a very simple act. Sometimes, it takes ordinary people to do the
extraordinary things. Sometimes, the only real let down is ignorance. But do remember this,
together, we can achieve bigger things. I truly believe that what we do today is our contribution
to the future generations. Make conservation for the environment, your way of life.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Before I end my speech, I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate SARAWAK
FORESTRY for achieving another ISO 9001:2000 Certificate. I believe that this will be a
promising start for the future of forest related R&D in Sarawak and for many more things to
come. Nourish what you already have and continue supporting the State and SARAWAK
FORESTRY conservation efforts. Let our healthy forests be there for many years to come.
Happy World Forestry Day to all.
Thank you
