WORLD OCEANS DAY: THE SCIENCE WE NEED FOR THE OCEAN WE WANT

The STEMi Makers Africa is a Non-Governmental organization aimed to boost employment, innovation,
inclusion and empower a talent base of 2,000,000 young Africans with STEM emerging tools, real-world
problem-solving skills where they can excel in STEM Lucrative pathways and become more experienced for
Africa’s workforce by 2030.

OBJECTIVE: To celebrate the role of the Oceans in our everyday life, inspire action to protect the ocean and
sustainable use of marine resources.

INTRODUCTION: Oceans cover 71% of Earth’s surface, and they hold 97% of our planet’s water. The oceans
help feed us and provide most of the oxygen we breathe. Oceans also play a key role in regulating the weather
and climate. Water evaporating from the oceans falls inland as rain, which we then use to drink and grow
crops. A variety of life-saving medicinal compounds including anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer drugs have
been discovered in the oceans.

Every June 8, we have an opportunity to raise global awareness of the benefits humankind derives from the
ocean and our individual and collective duty to use its resources sustainably. Future generations will also
depend on the ocean for their livelihoods. Our Ocean is Our Future.

GOALS AND EXPECTED IMPACT: This year, we are partnering with the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United State Consulate General in Lagos, Nigeria to
create a platform highlighting the WOD theme, ‘Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean’.

1. Our goal for Cameroon is to sensitize people on Ocean Literacy on the improper disposition of
plastic/wastes by spreading the word to advance sustainable production practices, enhance environmental
protection, and promote a more responsible citizenry. This exclusive edition will celebrate the successes of the
Ocean literacy community in Cameroon and explore them as an essential tool for the transformation of
scientific knowledge into action.

2. To launch a social media campaign tagged ‘I am an Ocean Hero’ where citizens can pledge and make an
individual commitment to a more ocean-friendly lifestyle. Focus on reducing plastic use, recycling and energy
consumption; keeping in mind the 5 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repurpose and Refuse. Businesses and
organizations can make a lasting commitment to the ocean as well by making a commitment to using less
plastic in facilities or adopt other sustainable practices.

HOW CAN YOU PARTNER WITH US: The STEMi Makers Africa cordially extends partnership with the
Social Enterprise for Environmental Development (SEED) to share perspectives in building a greater ocean
and community literacy to ensure a healthy home for all. The purpose of this partnership is to inform the
public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean
(Ocean Heroes), mobilize and unite Cameroon’s population on a project for the sustainable management of
the world’s oceans. We would like to celebrate World Oceans Day to remind everyone of the major roles the
oceans have in our everyday life. In the end, it is a day to create online awareness and celebrate together the
beauty, the wealth and the promise of the ocean.

As a prospective partner and supporter, you will be focused on Ocean conservation, sustainability and
Environmental education.
