History

The District Nandurbar is newly formed from the district Dhule. It came into existence with effect
from 1st July 1998.Nandurbar district consists of six tehsils viz. Akkalkuwa, Akrani, Talode,
Shahade, Nandurbar and Nawapur.

Administrative History
The district headquarters is located at Nandurbar city.
Nandurbar district is bounded to the south and south-east by Dhule district, to the west and north
is the state of Gujarat, to the north and north-east is the state of Madhya Pradesh.

History
The Climate of Nandurbar District is generally Hot and Dry.Temperatures can be as high as 45°
Celsius during the peak of Summer.The northern and western regions receive more rainfall than
the rest of the region.

It is one of the twelve districts in Maharashtra currently receiving funds from the Backward
Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF)
Nandurbar District has been selected as one of the aspiring districts in the country by NITI
Aayog.
VISION 2022
Har gaon’ Road connectivity and ‘har garh’ electricity would be strived for with special focus on
making Nandurbar as the Chilies Capital of India.

Health and Sanitation
Key Objectives
● To improve the nutritional and health status of children in the age group of 0 to 6 years.
● To lay proper foundation for psychological, physical and social development of the
children.
● To reduce the incidence of mortality(IMR and MMR), morbidity, malnutrition and school
drop-out.
● To achieve effective co-ordination of policy and implementation amongst the various
departments to promote child development.
● To enhance the capability of the mother to look after the normal health and nutritional
needs of the child through proper nutrition and health education.

Target
● It is a target to make 190 (two from each sector) Anganwadis as SMART (Adarsh)
Anganwadis.
● In these Anganwadis, we are trying to develop and maintain educational & nutritional
status of children belonging to the age group of 0 to 6 years. No child of these AWC’s will
be malnourished.
● Under Dr APJ Abdul KalamAmrutAharYojana, 11358 ANC and 11575 PNC mothers are
taking one time meal at 2236 AWC’s, to prevent low birth weight infants.
● Similarly, 113448, 6months to 6 years children are taking eggs/banana’s for 4 days a
week at 2236 AWC’s under this scheme.
● VCDC (Village Child Development Center) is being implemented in AWC’s for SAM
(severely acute malnourished) children all over the district with tribal department fund, to
prevent child mortality. IYCN (Infant and Young Child Nutrition) and MAA (Mothers
Absolute Affection) training of all ICDS supervisors and Anganwadi workers will be taken
from next year with an aim of prevention of malnutrition in the district.
● Multi-micronutrient syrups will be provided to all the children beneficiaries of 2437 AWC’s.
● Replacing all the non-resident AWW’s with resident of that particular village or pada to
ensure daily opening and providing all services to beneficiaries.
● Making system more accountable by taking regular review meetings and corrective
actions.
● Increasing coordination between different departments for implementing schemes
smoothly for the benefits of beneficiaries.
● Allocation of special authority to fill up the vacancies of the departments.
● Establishment and operationalization of Women’s Hospital of the high priority Dhadgaon
block with all facilities and technologies like x-ray and skilled manpower and specialist
doctors.
● Operationalizing BSU’s (Blood Storage Units) in high severe anemia and maternal as
well as child mortality blocks i.e. Akkalkuwa, Dhadgaon and Taloda blocks. Establishing
● District Vaccine store at district headquarter and Block vaccine store at Dhadgaon block
for maintain clod chain, so that vaccines retain its potency. Increasing the coverage of
ANC care and institutional deliveries by providing better infrastructure and accountability
of staff.
● Availability of specialist services (Gynecologists, pediatrician and anesthetists) in
secondary care hospitals of high priority blocks.
● Optimum use of facilities like SNCU and NRC’s and increasing follow up of discharged
children.

Swachh Bharat Mission


Swachh Bharat Mission (G) Programme launched for to achieve an improvement in the general
quality of life in the rural areas, by promoting cleanliness, hygiene and eliminating open
defecation.

IRAD
National Informatics Center, Nandurbar has successfully implemented iRAD project
in Nandurbar district with the support and coordination of stakeholders like Police
dept, RTO dept,Highway authority and health dept in district.

Tourism
– Making Toranmal a Tourist Destination
The development of tourism is pivotal in contributing to revenue generation,
employment creation, as well as stable and sustainable development of localities.
Nandurbar has a plethora of culture, wildlife and natural Scenic tourism potential.
However the District has seldom promoted or marketed itself as a tourist destination.
Most of the tourist visiting Nandurbar. The development of tourism is pivotal in
contributing to revenue generation, employment creation, as well as stable and
sustainable development of localities. The industry in the District is doing well. But
looking at the huge potential of the district and mix of pilgrimage centers, forests and
historical sites. Religious tourism places have the potential to appeal to tourists
beyond those visiting for just religious purposes. If explored to its optimum potential
and flourished, these can attract national and international visitors. A brief
description of the major tourist destinations is listed below to understand the
potential of tourism in Nandurbar.

Goal
● Surrounded by the Satpuda Mountain, Toranmal is narrow piece of plateau
showcasing varied flora and fauna varieties. The plants have medicinal and
aromatic value. With beautiful and scenic views, the place tanks second to
Mahabaleshwar as an important hill station in the state of Maharashtra.
Toranmal is at a distance of 40km. from Shahada and about 90km. from
district headquarter Nandurbar.
● There is need to provide quality eco-friendly infrastructure and
accommodation.
● Development and promotion of tourism, which would provide a unique
opportunity or physical invigoration, mental rejuvenation, cultural enrichment
and spiritual elevation.
● Under its objectives mentions development of tourism infrastructure including
niche products and special focus on promotion and marketing of tourism
products.
● Toranmal hill station is the main revenue generating tourism destination at
present. The circuit comprises of various tourist spots including Khadaki Point,
Gorakhnath Temple, Sita Khai, Yashwant Lake and Lotus Lake.
● Due to the rich flora, fauna and natural heritage value of the destination, the
Toranmal tourist circuit is envisaged to become an educational cum wellness
focus of the district.

1,59,502 students; that comes to 36 students per teacher.
● Around 257 secondary schools with 2765 teachers teaching 1,31,554
students, and no of students per teacher comes to 48.
● Government Polytechnic Nandurbar with four branches Electronics and
Telecommunication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer
Engineering, & Mechanical Engineering with an intake capacity of 60 seats
each.
● Total colleges for higher studies, including medical and engineering, is 30, and
more than 8580 students enrol each year.

Toranmal Hill Station
Toranmal hill station shares boundaries with Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and
Gujarat.The best time to visit Toranmal Wildlife Sanctuary is the months of January,
February, October, November, and December. Thousands of people from
Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat gather at the Gorakhnath temple to
attend a fair conducted on the eve of the Maha Shivratri day.
