Solutions for challenging applications

Additives for the lubricant oil industry

Additives for the Every application generates a different set of requirements.
lubricant industry That‘s why every lubricant needs to provide clearly defined
characteristics. By offering a broad range of additives for
metalworking fluids, greases and industrial lubricants, Rhein
Chemie can deliver tailor made solutions for any performance
profile.

Committed to innovation and quality

A tradition of innovation Right from the beginning, Rhein Chemie was a pioneer in the
field of lubricant additives. As early as the 1950s, we started
to market low-odor, high-performance extreme pressure ad-
ditives for lubricants. In subsequent years, we focused on
the development of lubricity esters, phosphorus and sulfur
additives to replace the chlorinated paraffins. In virtually all
applications, additives from Rhein Chemie not only can fully
replace these substances, they frequently can provide solu-
tions with even better performance.

Additional examples of Rhein Chemie‘s innovative strength

include additives for biodegradable lubricants and custo-
mized thickening systems for polyurea greases.

Current product highlights include our new water-miscible

additives and very effective additive packages, which exceed
the latest OEM standards. With these products, Rhein Che-
mie provides ideal, cost-effective methods for developing
new solutions.

Quality without compromise One of our primary goals is the ongoing improvement of our
high quality level. Our activities in this context are geared to
our ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification, which serves as an
incentive to continuously improve our production processes.
We impose high quality standards on all areas, not just on the
products themselves.

One key to the excellent quality of our products is the sta-

te-of-the-art technology used at our production locations in
Mannheim, Antwerp and Qingdao.

Superior quality can only be achieved by way of close co-

operation and intensive communication with our customers
and suppliers.

2
Global competence Rhein Chemie today has access to a worldwide network
when it comes to supporting customers in the development
and production of high-quality lubricants.

The best lubricant with Rhein Chemie

On site anywhere around the globe Rhein Chemie operates excellently equipped laboratories in
Mannheim and at its new location in Qingdao, China. In these
facilities, experienced specialists are constantly working on
solutions in close cooperation with customers, who benefit
from the know-how of a leading manufacturer with a world-
wide reputation for quality, reliability and intensive customer
care. On this basis, we offer a broad range of services, from
consultancy and comprehensive testing all the way to the
simulation of complex tribological systems.

Thanks to a worldwide distribution system, additives from

Rhein Chemie are available practically anywhere around the
globe. In this way, Rhein Chemie helps to solve application
related lubricant problems on all continents. Our distribution
system depends on employees, agents and distributors in
numerous countries and on local distribution centers.

Technology for good economy Highly advanced technologies are used for the implementa-
and ecology tion of all manufacturing processes at Rhein Chemie. They re-
flect the principles of Responsible Care by balancing econo-
mic requirements with ecological aspects and social needs.
One example is the emphasis on sustainable raw materials.

In recent years, Rhein Chemie has developed new products

used to manufacture lubricants that are certified to the new
European Eco-Label (EEL).

Another example is the use of several additives in offshore

applications, which comform to the OSPAR regulations.

3
High-performance additives for lubricants

Solutions for Additives are active ingredients added to lubricants giving

challenging applications new properties, reinforce existing and balance detrimental
properties.

High-performance additives from Rhein Chemie can replace

chlorinated paraffins in lubricants. They are top quality pro-
ducts, such as light-colored, low-odor sulfurized additives
based on sustainable raw materials.

Rhein Chemie offers a very broad range of customized high-

performance additives and formulations including products
that improve extreme-pressure resistance under boundary
lubrication conditions (EP), anti-wear performance (AW) or
corrosion inhibition (CI), water-miscible additives (WM), anti-
oxidants (AO) and specialties (SP).

Furthermore, we supply wide range of high-performance

additive packages (PA) for metalworking fluids, hydraulic
fluids, turbine, compressor, gear and multi-purpose oils.

Mode of action: Additin® EP products chemically react with the metal surface
Reduced cutting force to form a protective sulfur-containing film. This reduces direct
and lower friction metal-to-metal contact, thereby avoiding friction as well as
material damage, e.g. caused by welding. In addition, these
films contribute to the absorption of shock loads that might
occur during boundary lubrication under high pressure.

This product group was specially developed to meet the la-

test requirements of the lubricant oil industry and offers pre-
cisely the characteristics required in high-performance envi-
ronments:

➤➤ Low-order, light-colored additives with good solubility

in many base fluids

Mode of action: Corrosion inhibition additives in the Additin® CI range, such
Creating hydrophobic metal surfaces as synthetic calcium alkyl benzene sulfonate, are adsorbed
on the polar metal surface to form a water-repellent, protec-
tive film, thereby effectively reducing corrosion.

Certain acidic fumes, such as sulfur dioxide, are well known

for their accelerating effect on corrosion. To neutralize their
impact, Additin® CI products are recommended for all appli-
cations in highly aggressive environments. They are equip-
ped with additional alkaline reserves to neutralize any fumes
contributing to corrosion.

Application Lubricants are highly susceptible to aging. The additives of
the Additin® AO range dramatically slow the aging process
with all its negative side-effects. Antioxidants are performing
well in nearly all lubricants and fuels. Depending on the tem-
perature of a given application, phenolic or aminic formulati-
ons, or mixtures of both, may be recommended.

Specialties

Lubricity improvers
These additives are based on selected raw materials to op-
timize affinity to different metal surfaces, such as stainless
steel (e.g. Additin® RC 8100) or aluminum (e.g. Additin® RC
8103).

Yellow metal deactivators

SP/EP additives and non-ferrous metal deactivators (e.g. Ad-
ditin RC 8210 or Additin RC 8221) play an important role in
preventing corrosion and aging, while serving as synergists
to primary and secondary antioxidants.

Anti-hydrolysis additive
Additin® RC 8500 is a unique and effective acid scavenger
that is ideal for extending the service life of lubricants based
on esters and other synthetic base stocks.

Mode of action: The idea behind additive packages is to form a well balan-
Putting know-how in a package ced composition of many different individual components.
Such solutions reflect a high level of know-how and clearly
set Rhein Chemie apart from other chemical suppliers as a
true specialist in the field of additives. Additive packages in
the Additin® PA range are complex formulations, proven so-
lutions that help cut development time while assuring high
quality and reducing the costs for analysis, inventory and or-
dering.
