Title Selection and Writing: Important Points

Dear Students, your title is one of the most important tasks of your research undertaking. It reveals your
readiness to do a research. When selecting or rewriting your research title you must consider the
following three fundamental guides.

1. Your title is selected from your research problem. Before selecting your title you must
clearly know what problem you are going to solve and the purpose of conducting this
research (what solution are you aspiring?) and who will be benefited of the research.
2. The title summarizes the main idea or ideas of your study. It must adequately describe the
content and/or purpose of your research paper
3. A good title contains the fewest possible words (8 – 12 words).
4. The title should be precise and should not be misleading.

I want you to check your titles against the following simple but critical check lists.

i. Does the title clearly reflect the research problem?

 If your answer is “yes” how? (explain)
 If “no” rewrite your title or change your research problem
ii. Is the purpose of the research shown in the title?
 If your answer is “yes” how? (explain)
 If “no” rewrite your title
iii. Is the main beneficiary of the research indicated?
 If your answer is “yes” Mention the beneficiary (group of people or organization)
 If “no” rewrite your title
iv. Is the title precise and not misleading?
 If your answer is “yes” verify all words are appropriate and no duplication and
unnecessary word is there;
 If “no” rewrite your title and eliminate unnecessary and ambiguous terms.
