BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Online gaming addiction is a topic of increasing research interest. Since the early
2000s, there has been a significant increase in the number of empirical studies
examining various aspects of problematic online gaming and online gaming addiction.
Online game is very popular today to this modern era. Students nowadays are very
prone to the gigantic influence of technology. They have most the major portion on the
online gaming rather than their school performance or academic matters. Knowing that
there is a huge scratch to academic performance when you become addictive on using
technology, epidemics are continuously touching students one by one. The researcher
was triggered to find out where the students will be when they unceasingly connected
regarding on this staple.
For most of these students, on line gaming is one of the best past time that they
acquire.It is undeniably questionable that playing online games provide something that
no one can give. Studies revealed that the human brain is easy to destruct and one of
the reasons is using technology. The education system tends to go with the flow with
this constant change in the society in order to get things relevant to the generations
today. The dark side of playing online games became an issue of debate in school and
the whole Education Department at large. Thus, this study is conducted to determine
the associations of playing online games towards students’ academic performance.
The researcher of this study felt need to find out how online games really affect the
Senior High School of Bulatok Integrated School in terms of their academic
performance. The purpose of this study is to determine the implication of online gaming
to the students. It has an aim to find out how online games affect students’ intellectual
capacity in relation to their academic performance.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Senior high school students are increasingly engaging in online mobile gaming
activities, which may have a significant impact on their academic performance. This
study aims to investigate the relationship between the time spent on online mobile
gaming and the academic performance of senior high school students, with a focus on
understanding whether excessive gaming is associated with lower grades and reduced
academic achievement.
Research Questions
The general objective of this study is to find the effect of online games in academic
performance of Senior High School (SHS) students of Bulatok Integrated School.
Specifically, this sought to answer the questions:
To the senior high student – This study will help the student to know the limitation
about playing online mobile games and to make a good balance between playing
online mobile games and their academic performances. It will also serve as an
eye – opener that online mobile games can improve their academic performance
if they use them positively; likewise, spending too much on them will lead to
adverse effect.
To the teachers – The collected data in this study will serve as a guide on
handling their students regarding using cellphones inside the classroom. It also
gave teachers ideas on using online mobile games in their teaching strategies to
improve student performance.
Parents and Guardian – This study will help the parents and guardians to
become aware of the effects of online mobile games on the academic
performance of their child so that they can do some proper actions and discipline
needed. Furthermore, it will also serve to realize the positive effects of online
mobile games so that parents and guardians can allow their children to play
online mobile games to improve their academic performance.
Other researchers – This is study will serve as a guiding tool and instrument that
other researchers can use as a reference material for future studies relevant to
the topic.
ASSUMPTIONS OF THE STUDY
Research has shown that there is a significant correlation between the amount of time
spent on mobile gaming and academic performance. Students who spend more time
playing mobile games are likely to have lower academic performance compared to
those who spend less time.
The frequency of mobile gaming sessions also has a negative impact on academic
performance. Furthermore, students who engage in multiplayer mobile games are more
likely to have lower academic performance compared to those who play single-player
games. The use of mobile gaming during school hours negatively affects academic
performance, and the type of mobile game genre has an impact on academic
performance as well.
These assumptions can be tested through data collection and statistical analysis to
determine the actual effects of mobile gaming on senior high school academic
performance.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
Duration -This study was conducted in November and will ba completed in month
in 2024
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Academic Performance – how students deal with their studies and how they cope with
or accomplish different tasks given to them by their teachers.
Senior High School – an additional two years of grade schooling in secondary level,
Grade 11 and Grade 12.
Students – a person who is studying at a university or other place of higher education.
