IMPACT OF PLAYING ONLINE MOBILE GAMES ON THE ACADEMIC

PERFORMANCE OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Nowadays, the majority of students always have one or two phones with them.

The simplicity of a student benefit from having a mobile device because they can utilize it for
online classes, for playing video game, watching movies, utilizing social, etc. Because of this,
the alarming day more students are addicted to internet smartphone gaming. According to a
survey conducted by Rakuten incite in April 2022, 80percent of respondence in the Philippine
said they played online games. The same study revealed that the majority of online gamers
played daily.

Video games played online that require a steady and highspeed connection. The hardware in
smartphone and mobile phones also impact how well they play online mobile games. In a
multiplayer are paired according to their present skill level and compite against one another in
virtual world.

Online mobile gaming is almost always linked to poor academic performance. They have a
significant impact on how actively students participates in class. These online mobile games
include Mobile Legends, Clash of Clans, Call of Duty, and PUBG. Cornillez Jr. et al. state that
students experience optimal experience engaging in online mobile gaming. (Noplan 2017) also
stated that spending to much time playing online games will hurt performance. If this technology
is not handled properly by the students in their attitudes towards online games on mobile devices,
it may have an adverse effect on students academic performance over the time.
Several studies have been conducted mobile game addiction among children and adolescence,
but they need to be more studies about the effects of online mobile games among education of
students. Aiming to address the lock, this study’s objectives determines how to find online
mobile games affects the academic performance of grade 11 and grade 12 students at Ueg
National High School. This study also determined if there is no significant relationship between
online mobile games on the academic performance of grade 11 and grade 12 students at Ueg
National High School.

Statement of the Problem

This study determined the effect of online mobile games on the Academic Performance of grade
11 and grade 12 students at Ueg National High School. Specifically, this study answered the
following questions:

1. What is the academic performance of the students?


2. What are the types of online mobile games being played by the students? Number of
hours spent per day playing online mobile games?
3. How do students perceive the effects of online mobile games on their academic
performance?

Significant of the study

This study undertaken to find out the relationship between mobile games to their academic
performance.

Benefiting the study in the various sectors are as follows:


To the grade 12 students-This study will help the students to know their limitations about
playing online mobile games and to make a good balance between playing online mobile game
and their academic performance. It will also serve as an eye-opener that online mobile games can
improve their academic performance if they are them positively; likewise, spending too much on
theme will lead to adverse effects.

To the teachers-The collected data in this study will serve as a guide on handling their students
regarding using cellphones inside the classroom. It also gave teachers ideas on using online
mobile games in their teaching strategies to improve student performance. Administration will
develop the best programs and activities to improve their approach

Parents and guardians-This study will helps the parents and guardians to become aware of the
effects of online mobile games in the academic performances of their child so that they can do
same proper actions and discipline needed. Furthermore it will also serve to realize the positive
effects of online mobile game so that parents and guardians can allow their children to play
online mobile games to improve their academic performance.

Other researcher-This study will serve as a guiding toll and instrument that other researchers can
use as reference material for future studies relevant to the topic.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study will delimit the problem,locale,population,instrument,and duration.

Problem. This study focused on the effects of online mobile games on the academic performance
of grade 11 and grade 12 students who are fond of playing online games.
S.Y 2023 – 2024

Locale. This study will be conducted at Ueg National High School located at Brgy. Ueg, purok 3.
San Mariano Isabela.

Population. The study’s respondent were grade 11 and grade 12 student from 1 st semester
enrolled as of 2023 – 2024 at Ueg National High School.
Instrument. A survey questionnaire made by the researchers was used in gathering the data
needed for the study.

Duration. This study will be conducted on October and will be completed in December 2023.

Theoretical Framework

Review of Related Literature

This chapter presents the related literature and studies analyzed by the researchers to substantiate
the results of this study. This is the basis for formulating the framework of the study. Including
the
hypothesis of definition of terms.

Effects of Online Mobile Games on Academic Performance

Online mobile gaming is one factors influencing the students’ academic performance. Students’
attitudes toward playing games online using mobile phones are not properly managed, this
technology may impact their academic performance. In some studies, it is widely believed that
game players who spend playing online games in a long period of time (above 10 hours a day)
are at high risks of being addicted to video games (Anand, 2007) as cited by (Manduan 2023).
Online gaming addiction is not far from drug addiction. Both are searching for a way to make
them feel better. However, playing online games is considered as one of the most popular leisure
activities in some people (Huang, 2003)as cited by (Manduan 2023). Students become so
engrossed in a period that nothing seems to matter. Pupils at Ueg National High School – SHS in
Ueg San Mariano. Isabela who enjoyed playing online games harmed their academic
performance. They that students who are playing mobile games struggle to focus on their
academics, and unable to finish their assignments and projects, and received poor grades. The
results of their studies found that out of 40 respondence, 7-10 per-sections indicated that playing
online games harms their academic performance. The researchers concludes that a students’
participation in online games may harm their academic achievement.

Most Online Mobile Games Played

Mobile games are the most popular leisure activity among today’s youth. Teens spend most of
their time playing online mobile games rather than participating in outdoor activities, spending
time with friends or family, or studying. Mobile Legends is the most-played mobile game in the
country. This multiplayer online battle arena, released in 2016, Mobile Legends is the one of the
most-played mobile games in South Asia. Due to is widespread appeal in the region, this game
won the prize for the inaugural Esports medal competition at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in
the Philippines. Mobile Legends is still played today by players worldwide with enjoyment and
recognition in gaming. Another is the Call of Duty, the best-selling video game franchise
worldwide available on P.C., and first released in 2003. Around 270 million people have
downloaded Call of Duty. It has many awards since its introduction in the mobile gaming world,
because it become a popular name Esports arena hand as stature in the gaming world.

In this study, the researchers aim to determine what game the Grade 11 and Grade 12 students
played mostly at Ueg National High School- SHS.

Online games as stress relievers

Teens who played online games are just having a fun. They do not just actually play because of
some sort of seriousness, but also because they just want to feel relief. During school hours,
students tend to feel stressed due to loads of school works and through playing it will relive their
stress.

The above figure the research paradigm of the study. It is divided into two parts:

independent and dependent variables. Independent variables include the Students’

perception of the effect of online mobile games on academic performance and online

mobile games played. The dependent variable consists of the academic performance

of the students.

Definition of terms

For a better understanding of this study, the following terms are defined in the context of this
research.
Online mobile games-games that the students played using mobile phones.
Effects- the result on playing online mobile games that existed, done, or happened concerting
their academic performance

Grade 11 and Grade 12 – people that will serve as respondents of the study.

Online mobile games played. This term use in this research refers to the different kind of online
mobile games played by the grade 11 and grade 12 students, such as Mobile Legends, Call of
Duty Mobile, Clash of Clans, Free Fire etc.
