Speaking Comprehension Test for 9th Form Students

Directions: In this test you will select three task slips from those before you. After
selecting three, choose the one you feel you are most capable to speak about and
return the other two to the table face down. Then take about a minute to collect your
thoughts before you begin to speak on the topic. You may refer to the topic as
needed. Take a deep breath and begin.
1. Comment on the job that you would most like to do in the future.
You should say:
 what the job is;
 what skills and qualifications you would need to get the job if you think you
will ever do this job;
 explain what appeals to you about this kind of work.

2. Describe a time when you gave someone advice.


You should say:
 to whom you gave the advice and what the advice was;
 explain why you gave the person that advice;
 whether that person followed your advice.

3. Describe a person (you know), much older than you, who you admire.
You should say:
 who this person is and why you admire this person;
 how you know this person
 how this person has influenced you

4. Speak about a song that’s very meaningful to you.


You should say:
 the name of the song and who sings in;
 what the song is about;
 explain why the song is meaningful to you.

5. Describe a holiday that you celebrate with other people.


You should say:
 what the holiday in and who you celebrate the holiday with;
 how you celebrate the holiday;
 why you celebrate this holiday with other people.

6. Describe a technological device you recently purchased.


You should say:
 what the device is and why you purchased the device;
 what it can do;
 whether you use the device for fun, for work, or both.

7. Describe a recent news story that surprised you.


You should say:
 what happened;
 when and where the story happened;
 why you found this news story surprising.

8. Describe a time you had difficulty in learning a new language.


You should say:
 what language you were learning and what the difficulty was;
 whether or not you overcame the difficulty;
 and explain why you found learning the language so difficult at the time.

9. Describe a kind thing you did for someone.


You should say:
 what you did and for what purpose;
 how the person or people responded to your kind act;
 why you consider that the act was kind.

10.Describe a piece of art that you think is good.


You should say:
 what kind of art it is
 what the art looks like and where you saw the art
 why you think this piece of art is good.

11.Describe a good decision you made.


You should say:
 what the decision was about and what you decided to do
 why you made the decision
 why you feel you made a good decision.

12.Describe a person who is often in the news, and who you would like to
meet.
You should say:
 who this person is
 how you know him/her
 why he/she is often in the news and why you would like to meet him/her.

13.Describe a performance you enjoyed watching.


You should say:
 what the performance was
 when and where you watched the performance
 why you enjoyed the performance.

14.Describe a positive change that you made in your life.


You should say:
 what the change was and who helped you;
 when and how it happened;
 why it was a positive change.
15.Describe an event that changed your life (or, changed you) in a good way.
You should say:
 when and where it happened
 what the change was
 how you benefited from this change.

16.Describe a recent restaurant experience.


You should say:
 where and what you ate
 who you went with
 how you felt about experience.

17.Describe a practical skill that you have learnt (e.g. cooking, driving).
You should say:
 what the skill is
 how you learnt it
 why you learnt it and how this skill has helped you.

18.Describe a modern building.


You should say:
 where it is
 what it is used for
 why you like/dislike it.

19.Describe a prize that you would like to win.


You should say:
 what the prize is for and what you would have to do to win it;
 how you know about it;
 why you would like to win this prize.

20.Describe an aim or goal that you hope to achieve in the future.


You should say:
 what the aim is and what you need to do to reach your goal
 when you hope to achieve it
 why this goal is important to you.

21.Describe a time when you couldn’t use your mobile phone.


You should say:
 where and when it was;
 what you were doing at this time;
 why you were not able to use your mobile phone.

22.Describe a place you have visited that has ever been affected by pollution.
You should say:
 what place it was and how it was affected by pollution;
 why you went there;
 how you felt about this situation.
