Background Information

In this era, English language is essential for a student in order to

achieve certain requirements for work. It plays an important role in the
communication skills of students in order to give a good first
impression. Nowadays, the amount of students using English language
in classroom to participate in classes is very little. There could be some
factors affecting Polytechnic students in English language usage in
classroom. One of them could be their self-confidence, lack of English
language usage in daily communication, lack of English foundation
background and knowledge. This research is to determine the major
factor affecting Polytechnic student in English language usage in
classroom. Hence, we can improve the way of teaching English in
Polytechnic and suggest new strategies to improve them.
Problem Statement
The problem of Polytechnic students speaking English in classroom has not been
solved yet, especially the problem of oral communication in the usage of English
language in class. One among the many reasons to take into considerations might
be the lack of confidence and anxiety about making grammar errors and speaking

Conclusion

From our findings, we can conclude that students of Polytechnic Kuching under
Business Department have lack of self confidence of speaking English mainly
because they are afraid of speaking not fluent English. Based on the frequency
of students speaking English in daily life, they usually speak English and most
of them learn English language knowledge from their secondary school. Last
but not least, most of the students listen and speaks English language from
friends and through social background such as social media, television and
more.
