Chapter 1

This chapter includes a discussion about the study, specifically the background of the

study, statement of the problem, the significance of the study, scope and delimitations, and

definitions and terms.

Background of the Study

Rust is a serious problem with metal products. In fact, it is the leading cause of property

damage, as it corrodes metal and can spread quickly to other metallic surfaces. (CAMM Metals

August 21, 2017).

The presence of rust is common problem for various industries and application. It not

only affects the aesthetic appearance of surfaces but can also compromise their structural

integrity and performance. As a result the need for effective rust removal solution has become

increasingly important. One such solution is the rust sand blaster, a tool designed specifically for

the purpose of removing rust from surfaces. However, the effectiveness and efficiency of these

rust blaster vary based on various factors such as design, materials used, and operating

procedures. This study aims to evaluate and analyze the innovation and effectiveness of rust sand

blasters, with the goal of identifying areas for improvement and optimizing their performance.

By understanding the background of rust sand blasters and exploring innovation approaches, this

study aims to contribute to the development of more efficient and reliable rust removal solutions

and for various industries and applications.

Abrasive blasting is another name for sandblasting. Basically, it works from a high

pressure of air from a compressor forcibly propelling a stream of abrasive material/ abrasive sand
to the surface with rust and dirt. Under the high pressure the surface removes all unnecessary dirt

from the surface. It helps the rough surfaces to smoothen and clean before performing other

finishing work. It basically helps the worker to clean the dirt and rust much easier and minimize

time consuming. The effect of sand blast is similar to the sanding paper but it just using an air

compression. (Meriam-Webster, Inc., 2023).

Sand blasting uses an abrasive sand driven/ push by a pressure of air compression to

remove dirt, rust and contaminants, to improve the rough surfaces to smooth surfaces.

(S.N. Papageorgiou, N. Pandis 2017). Due to improving economy and environment of country

the machining industry must have an improvising technology to minimize the work process and

the used materials of rust removing and dirt removing on the contaminated surfaces.

Other machine was wet blasting uses a pressure of water. High pressure water jet process

are extreme pressure of water that flows to nozzle having a wide-range of advancement in

cleaning, derusting, cutting, etc. shows the advancement of technology in machining this

machine show the strong adaptability and unique advantages. (Hongfen Wang 2020)

Metal rust is a type of corrosion of metal that combines the reaction of iron to the water

and oxygen in the day and night. The reaction of the oxygen and water eats the metal surfaces

and leave a brown traces of stain and it is the effect of the oxidation. It came from the exposure

of mostuire trough the night example of this is humidity of air in the night. Rust can cause to

shorten the lifespan of the metal being contaminated the smooth surfaces in it.

With the issue of unstoppable breakout of rust in metals, other researcher have study

other idea to prevent the break out of rust on metal surfaces we have thought to innovate and
evaluate the cleaning tool to smoothen before applying anti rust solution or other work for the

contaminated metal surfaces.

Research Objectives

The study aimed to innovate and evaluate the Sand Blaster Rust Remover.

Specifically, this study focuses on the following research objectives:

1. To innovate the sand blaster cabinet

2. To determine the the level of quality characteristics of the Sand Blaster Rust Remover in

terms of.

a. workability

b. safety

c. efficiency, and

d. affordable materials needed

Scope and Deliminatation

This research focused on determining the quality characteristics of the sand blaster rust

remover regarding the workability, safety, efficiency, and the affordale material used. The

respondents in this study are the panel of evaluators from the Catanduanes State University –

College of Industrial Technology instructor/ mentors who has a knowledge in the major of

mechanical technology. The product was developed in Cavinitan,Virac Catanduanes.

The study only covered the innovation and evaluation of sand blaster rust remover.

Therefore, iit did not cover comparison to any sand blaster readily available on the market

industry.

Significance of the Study

This study is vital on the ground thst the result could serve as a sound construction.

To the Mechanical Technology Professor/ mentors, the knowledge acquired from this

study wills serve as a guide on how sand blaster is effective not only on mechanical courses but

in all aspect work related on removing dirt, rust and removing contaminated metal sheet. In

addition, the result of this study will give them ideas that used materials cand be used to

construct a sand blaster. When this machine be constructed, they can minimize the time

consumed for sanding a surface, less expensive from the market value, and less pollution.

To the Future Researcher, they will be able to get an idea to help them in their research

which may be similar to their study.

Definition of Terms

Abrasive a substance (such as emery or pumice) used for abrading, smoothing, or

polishing. (Meriam-Webster, Inc., 2023)

Adaptability capable of being or becoming adapted. (Meriam-Webster, Inc., 2023). One

of the quality of a worker to operate with or witout skills.

Affordable having a cost that is not too high. (Meriam-Webster, Inc., 2023). This one of

the quality objectives that were measured by panel of evaluators.

Efficiency capable of producing desired results with little or no waste (as of time or

materials). effective operation as measured by a comparison of production with cost (as in

energy, time, and money. (Meriam-Webster, Inc., 2023). This one of the quality objectives that

were measured by panel of evaluators.

Nozzle a short tube with a taper or constriction used (as on a hose) to speed up or direct a

flow of fluid. (Meriam-Webster, Inc., 2023). A part needed for the machine.

Rust the reddish brittle coating formed on iron especially when chemically attacked by

moist air and composed essentially of hydrated ferric oxide. A comparable coating produced on a

metal other than iron by corrosion. (Meriam-Webster, Inc., 2023)
