This document discusses empathy as one of the six aspects of understanding that can be used to measure student learning according to Understanding by Design. Empathy involves students understanding the feelings or perspectives of others, which is key to building strong meaningful relationships and helping others. As an example of applying the empathy aspect in arts and culture learning, the document describes how an art teacher leads students in discussing the meanings of a painting projected in class. Each student tries to feel and understand the message or feelings the artist aimed to convey through the painting and shares their perspective, recognizing that interpretations may differ based on individual life experiences and memories.
