Three years after Marcos and his administration were ousted through the People

Power Revolution, which resulted in his exile in Hawaii, United States together with his
family and allies, Marcos passed away on September 28, 1989 at St. Francis Medical Center
at the age of 72 due to ailments of the heart, lungs, and kidney. Corazon Aquino, then
president, however, refused for Marcos’ body to return to and be buried in the Philippines,
saying that it was for “the safety of those who would take the death of Mr. Marcos in widely
and passionately conflicting ways” (Gross, 1989). By September 7, 1993, under the
presidency of then President Fidel V. Ramos, Marcos’ body was allowed to return to the
Philippines in his home province in Ilocos Norte, but was not allowed to be buried in the
Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB) as part of the conditions in the deal signed by the
Philippine government. This decision stirred public discourse, with the country divided on
whether Marcos deserves or not to be buried at the LNMB. After unsuccessful attempts to
bury Marcos in the renowned cemetery in succeeding administrations due to strong
opposition, in August 2016, Former President Rodrigo Duterte approved the burial of
Former President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, stating that Marcos is
qualified for the burial and he even welcomes protests from other Filipinos who are not in
favor. After being transferred from his hometown to the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB) in
Taguig City, Former President Ferdinand Marcos was laid to rest there 27 years after his
passing. Marcos was given a 21-gun salute, according to Albayalde.
