READ

Read the text and answer the questions. Choose a, b, c or d.

CARL WARNER has made his name as a photographer but

his subject is something quite unique. You won’t find models or

famous people in his studio, just lots and lots of fruit and

vegetables.

Although his work began as a part-time hobby and a bit of

fun, Carl has become known for his “foodscapes,” in which

he uses fresh fruit and vegetables to create models of landscapes. At first, the viewer thinks they
are looking at a picture of an ordinary landscape. It is only on closer inspection they realise the
entire scene is made from food.

Carl has made many rural and wild landscapes including farms, waterfalls and forests, but several
companies have requested his help in advertising. One project involved recreating the London
skyline. Using foods such as watermelon, carrot and asparagus, he recreated monuments such as
Big Ben, The London Eye, the Houses of Parliament and Tower Bridge.

Carl’s work has become so popular, and he has become so ambitious, that he now has to work
with special food advisers. They help Carl select the best fruit and vegetables to use and also find
the best examples of that food. For example, they will find the best-looking pieces of broccoli to
use when Carl wants to make a tree.

The Englishman is working on his second book, which he hopes will encourage healthy eating.
Warner also hopes that by using food, something we all deal with day to day, as a medium for his
art that his work will appeal to all, not only art enthusiasts.

1. How did Warner start his work?

a. He was asked to make a model for an advertising company.
