What I Need to Know

This module will help you provide different activities which will assist you in
encouraging the learners to use clear and coherent sentences employing
appropriate grammatical structures: kinds of nouns - mass nouns and count nouns,
possessive nouns, collective nouns.

Please help the learners in sharing their ideas and knowledge from their
experiences so that there will be collaboration and learning will be easy.
Answers are written at the back of this module. Inculcate to the learners the
value of honesty while answering this module.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. use clear and coherent sentences employing appropriate grammatical


structures: kinds of nouns - mass nouns and count nouns, possessive nouns,
collective nouns
2. identify mass nouns, count nouns, possessive nouns, or collective nouns in
sentences;
3. follow the rules in using and writing the possessive form of nouns; and

Using nouns in sentences has been a part of our day to day communication. It
is difficult to say much without using a noun. There are several different kinds of
English nouns. It is often useful to recognize what type or kind a noun is because
different types sometimes have different rules. This lesson will help you use them
correctly.

What Is It
Discussion of Activity 1

A Noun is a word that names a person, a place, a thing, an object, an animal,


or an event.
Kinds of Nouns:
1. Mass Nouns are nouns which cannot be counted. Generally, they cannot
be pluralized.
2. Count Nouns are nouns which can be counted as one or more.

3. Collective Noun expresses the idea of “many but they are considered as
one”. It refers to a group or a whole unit of persons, animals, places,
or objects.

Here are examples of commonly used collective nouns.

A. Persons:
army, battalion, family, faculty, jury, audience, class, choir, gang,
committee, cast, troupe, team

B. Animals:
pack of wolves, school of fish, swarm of bees/flies, bed of oysters,
flock of birds, tribe of monkeys, pride of lions, herd of cows/cattle,
battalion /colony of ants.

C. Objects:
string of pearls, chain of mountains/restaurants, bouquet of flowers,
box of chocolates, pack of candies, set of dishes, collection of coins,
cars etc., constellation of stars, pile of leaves/garbage etc., tray
of eggs

4. Possessive nouns express ownership or possession.

A. We add an apostrophe s („s) to singular noun or an apostrophe after s


(s‟) to nouns ending in s.
Examples:
1. The bag of Leslie is new.
Leslie’s bag is new.
2. The dog of Alexis is big.
Alexis’ dog is big.

B. When a plural noun ends with an “s”, simply add an apostrophe („) to
make it possessive.
Examples:
1. The pencils of my cousins are sharp.
My cousins’ pencils are sharp.
2. The shoes of the dancers are colorful.
The dancers’ shoes are colorful.

C. With irregular plural nouns that do not end with "s," add an apostrophe
and “s” („s).
Examples:
1. The toys of the children are colorful.
The children’s toys are colorful.
2. The nets of the fishermen were donated by Mr. Reyes.
The fishermen’s nets were donated by Mr. Reyes.

4. When a plural noun ends in “s” we only put apostrophe at the end to make
it possessive.
5. To make a singular noun possessive, add only an apostrophe („) at the end.
6. Collective nouns refer to group of units considered as one.
