A. Identifying Complements
Underline the complement in each sentence below. On the line before the sentence, write d.o. for
direct object, p.n. for predicate nominative, or p.a. for predicate adjective. Complements may be
compound.

B. Writing with Complements


For each of the following descriptions, write a sentence on your own paper that contains the
complement described. Then underline that complement.

C. Writing a Letter About the First Thanksgiving Feast


You were present at the first Thanksgiving feast at Plymouth Colony. The people you met,
including Chief Massasoit and his friends, were unforgettable. The food was, too. Now, on your
own paper, write a friendly letter about the event to a friend in England.
1. Go online to research the first Thanksgiving. List people who attended, and jot down
notes about each person. Discover what food was served. Describe how it might have
looked, smelled, and tasted.
2. Write fifteen sentences to describe the first Thanksgiving as if you had been there.
Underline the direct objects, the indirect objects, and subject complements that you use.

Dear Mary,
Our Thanksgiving was a great success! Massasoit and a large
number of his people arrived. They were very generous to us. They
brought several deer, which gave us enough meat for a month.
