Question:

Your neighbour, Kalilah Bt Omar presented to you the following matter:

Kalilah, is a female Muslim, 35 years of age. In the year 2019, Kalilah married a successful
social media influencer, Wan Ahmand, who is also known as ‘Abang Proton’. Kalilah and
Wan Ahmad’s marriage is blessed with two daughters aged four and two years old.

Early this year, Kalilah discovered her husband’s infidelity with a foreign woman. Kalilah
was upset and she decided to confront her husband. The confrontation led to a huge
quarrel and since that day, her husband did not return home. Kalilah also noticed that
her husband failed to pay their children’s school fees and her monthly allowance.

Kalilah is currently unemployed, and her savings is not enough to cover the house
expenditure and her children’s fees. She planned to back to her hometown in Sandakan
and contemplates on getting a divorce. However, she is clueless in respect of the divorce
procedure in Malaysia. Kalilah also wishes to know more about other alternatives to
divorce.

As a lawyer, provide a legal opinion on the power of Legal Aid Department. How can Legal Aid
Department help Kalilah? Is there any other avenue that may offer similar assistance?
