GENERAL INTRODUCTORY INFORMATION ON CAREER PLANNING COURSE
1.Career definition
Career is a general professional process a person chooses to pursue throughout his / her
working life. It consist of a sequence of work related positions an individual occupies.
2. Career planning
Career planning is an ongoing process whereby an individual sets career goals and
identifies means to achieve them. It is a flexible process with multiple contingencies for
life’s work. During the career planning process the following factors are normally
evaluated in obtaining the particular professional work:
 Education
 Knowledge
 İntelligence level
 Skills
 Abilities
 Competences / talents
 Experiences and interests
3. Career path
Career path is a flexible line of movement through which a person may travel or move
through his / her work life. It is formed and developped by the persons choices and
decisions.
4. Career development
Career development is a formal approach used by any organization to ensure its
employees with proper and suitable qualifications, abilities and experiences are
available when needed. The organization itself should motivate, train and develop its
employees as part of its human resources management function.
As for the persons who are planning and further developping their careers there are
university courses, career planning centers, career planning consultants which are
instrumental to be helpful to search for and determine the persons’ future career.
5. The objectives of HLC 102 Career Planning course
This particular Career Planning course is targeting to teach, assist and provide the
necessary information to Haliç University students in starting to plan their future career
through the presentation of Career Planning videos which we shall continue to present
each week with a very important different career related videos throughout this
semester. These videos are expected to provide necessary and valuable information for
the students for preparing them to plan and shape up their future career. Each video
would deal with a separate, distinct subject concerning the students’ personal
characteristics, skills, talents and specific industrial sectors to channel the students in
the right direction in planning and determining their future careers.Furthermore, we
are also encouraging the students to benefit from the following institutional centers or
organizations:

 Haliç University Career Center will provide the students very valuable
assistance in planning their career. Students are encouraged to get in
touch and visit the Career Center.
 Student Clubs at the University, particularly in connection with specific
project works.
 Attending related conferences, seminars, meetings and activities.
 Applying, attending national and intermational educational courses,
career and cultural programs such as Erasmus, Farabi, Mevlana etc.
 Being in close contact with their professors to get valuable and correct
information about the content of the courses that would be extremely
valuable in planning for their future career.
 Trying to get part time jobs while they are attending the University
curriculum.
 Attending and completing the internship processes as part of their
curriculum.
 If possible getting in touch with career consulting firms in planning their
career.
The videos will provide valuable information about the professionals’ views employed in
various industrial organizations and professions as well as information on cultural and
environmental factors that play important roles in the students’ future professional
lives.
The mid term and the final exams will be based on the information provided by the
videos and the associated lecture notes. Therefore, students are advised to follow the
vişdeos and the lecture notes closely, which reflect different chapters and subjecst
involved in the career planning course.
