Assignment 1
Instructions

1. This assessment covers topics in Units 1 and 2 of the ELL201/05 course materials.

2. The total marks for Assignment 1 are 100 and contribute 30% to the total grade.

3. Please note that this is an individual assignment.

4. You are expected to include a references section listing out all the relevant resources you
have consulted in completing this assignment. The references and in-text citations should be
in APA (American Psychological Association) style. Marks will be deducted for
inappropriate style.

5. Your assignments are to be submitted via the Online Assignment Submission (OAS) System.
The deadline for Assignment 1 submission is Friday, 7 October 2022 @ 23:59. If you need
to apply for extension, please do so before the deadline.

6. It is important that you know that evidence of plagiarism will be taken seriously. Please read
through the University’s definitions of plagiarism and collusion.

Please NOTE you DO NOT need to passage your Assignment to the Turnitin system.
However, you are encouraged to produce honest academic writing. Your tutor may
passage your assignment through Turnitin at any time and a similarity index of 30% and
above is NOT ACCEPTABLE and must be reviewed. Failure to do so would result in
failure of the assignment.

7. Please submit your assignment through the Online Assignment Submission (OAS)
system. We do not accept submissions through hard copies.

8. Please adhere to the guidelines below for assignment submission:

i. The manuscript should be typewritten using Times New Roman, font size 12 with 1.5
spacing throughout the manuscript, on the A4-sized layout with the left and right margins set
to 2 cm and top and bottom margins set respectively to 1.7 cm and 2 cm.

ii. A cover sheet with the student’s name, course code and course name should accompany
the assignment. It can be found in the Course Assessment section in FlexLearn.

iii. Your response should be logically divided into sections and subsections.

iv. Indicate the word count of your answer at the end of the assignment.

v. Wikipedia and your course materials cannot be counted as part of your references.
Assignment Task:

In around 1500 words, answer both questions below:

1. Discuss the evolution of languages and how it influences human development.

2. Using the IPA system, transcribe the following sentences into its phonetic transcriptions.

(i) Ben has two pet dogs.


(ii) Their names are Zack and Bailey.
(iii) He loves taking them to the park for runs.

Assignment Guidelines and Marks Allocation

In between 1500 words, organise your essay under the following sections:

1) a) Introduction (10 marks)


• A brief definition of second language learning.

b) Main discussion (40 marks)


• Discuss the evolution of languages including language contact and language
change. (10 marks)
• Reflect on the impact language has towards education, economy and education.
Your discussion should include history, government policies and/or technology
development. (30 marks)

c) Conclusion (10 marks)


• Summarise your thoughts of the discussion.

d) Organisation and Language Use (10 marks)


• Coherence – sentences and paragraphs.
• Accuracy – correct grammar usage
• Evidence of correct spelling
• Appropriate choice of vocabulary
• Adherence to the work count.

e) References and Citation (10 marks)


• List out at least 3 relevant entries / sources in your reading for the assignment.
• Adhere to the APA style in your references and in-text citations.

2) Question 2 requires each word to be transcribed from English to its phonetic


transcription. 1 mark will be awarded for each correctly transcribed word.
