ELL201/05 General Linguistics

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:

1. This assignment is the final assessment to replace the proctored examination.

2. This assignment contributes 40% towards the total grade.

3. Answer ALL questions in the assignment.

4. You are allowed a maximum of one (1) attempt to submit your assignment.

5. The assignment will be made available from 7th November 2022, Monday (00:00)
until 30th November 2022, Wednesday (23:59).

6. Completed assignment must be submitted by 30th November 2022, Wednesday

(23:59).

7. Please note that this is an individual assignment.

8. Plagiarism or collusion of any kind, including copying from one another, may result in
disciplinary action in addition to all colluding parties being awarded a zero for the
assignment.

9. The manuscript should be typewritten using Times New Roman font size 12 with
1.5 spacing throughout the manuscript, on the A4-sized layout with the left and right
margins set to 2 cm and top and bottom margins set respectively to 1.7 cm and 2
cm.

10. A cover sheet with your name, course code and title should accompany the
assignment.

Assignment Task

Answer the question below in about 1800 words.

Discuss with examples how semantic and pragmatic concepts are used in the media.
Explain how they are applied with examples from authentic texts.

Assignment Guidelines and Marks Allocation

Introduction (5 marks)
• Discuss the importance of semantics and pragmatics in daily use.

Body (60 marks)

• Identify three (3) semantic concepts. Using authentic texts as examples, explain
how each concept functions in media use to achieve conversational goals. (30
marks)
• Identify three (3) pragmatic concepts. Using authentic texts as examples, explain
how each concept functions in media use to achieve conversational goals. (30
marks)
• The authentic texts used can be used together or separately to explain both
semantic and pragmatic concepts. The texts must be attached as appendices.

Conclusion (5 marks)
• Summarise your thoughts on the issue and reflect on what you have learnt from
your assignment.

The content of the assignment accounts for 70 marks as shown above whereas the
other 30 marks are awarded for writing style as follows:

Organisation & Presentation of Points (10 marks)

- Clarity and Coherence – sentences and paragraphs
- Adherence to prescribed format such as use of sub headings, paragraphing and
word count.

Language Use & Grammar (10 marks)

- Correct grammar usage
- Evidence of correct spelling
- Presence of correct punctuations
- Appropriate choice of vocabulary

Referencing (10 marks)

- Evidence of sufficient references to at least 3 authoritative and relevant sources
in discussion.
- Adherence to correct APA style in in-text citations and bibliography entries.
