Mixed Media
Your Task:
For the project portion of your culminating mark, you will create a mixed media artwork with a message.
You can use any media available in class. This task is worth 20% of your final mark.
Due: January 22th.
Steps:
1. Planning and Focusing
Brainstorm & Research
Document your thinking/research in your sketchbook and save your reference images (you will add them to
your portfolio before beginning your artwork).
a) Choose a subject, issue, or theme you are passionate about.
b) Research how other artists portray your topic and explore how artists use mixed media. Also, research
images you may want to use for reference.
c) Decide how you will portray your chosen topic in an artwork. Use brainstorming, concept webs, and/or
group discussions to formulate original artwork concepts. Consider the following questions:
• How might you combine alternative and traditional media?
• How can you affect a viewer’s impression of your work by altering the materials, techniques, or
media?
• What type of symbols might you use to enhance your message?
• How might you use conventions such as juxtaposition or exaggeration?
d) Decide which media will be best suited for the project and what techniques you plan to use.
Planning Critique
Participate in a planning critique in a small group. Discuss your plan and give others feedback on their plans.
Remember to use art terminology! Reflect and then revise your plan in response to feedback you receive.
Portfolio
Create a Mixed Media page on your digital portfolio for this project. Under the heading “Planning and
Focusing” add the following:
• the creative process guide includes research and brainstorming notes
• images you used to inspire and direct your project (other artists’ work that inspired your ideas and
reference images)
• your planning sketches exploring composition
• your media and technique practice
2. Creation
Create your art piece. Revise your work based on feedback and reflection. Use all the class time given.
3. Critical Analysis
Use your knowledge of art terminology and the elements and principles of design to complete a thorough and
thoughtful critical analysis of your artwork. You can write your response using the prompts below or use the
question sheet on Edsby.
Describe
Use descriptive words to describe what the viewer sees when looking at your artwork. Imagine that you are
describing every detail to a person who cannot see it. What is the subject matter? What media and
techniques did you use?
Analyze
Describe how you used the elements and principles of design to create an effective composition. Discuss
how you used at least two elements and one principle in your response. Also include what composition
technique(s) you used.
Interpret
What message did you portray in your artwork? Describe how you manipulated some of the elements and
principles of design to emphasize your message. Explain what inspired you to create an artwork based on
this message.
Assess
How did you revise your planned artwork as a result of experimentation with media and techniques? In
what ways does your completed work differ from your original version?
Based on the list above, explain what parts of the artwork you might change to increase their effectiveness.
Possible Media:
• pencil • printmaking • coloured pencils
• charcoal • collage • pastels
• fabric • ink • paint (acrylic, oil,
watercolour)
